5 Let the
enemy ['oyeb] persecute [radaph] my soul,
[nephesh] and take [nasag] it; yea, let him tread down [ramac] my life [chay] upon the
earth, ['erets] and lay [shakan] mine honour [kabowd] in the
dust. [`aphar] Selah. [celah] KJV-Interlinear
5 Let the
enemy pursue my soul and overtake it; And let him trample my life down to the
ground, And lay my glory in the dust. Selah. NASB
There is a just cause for punishment and there is an unjust cause. Everything God has designed is just. Everything that the world designs when it differs from Gods establishment principles, are unjust.
But David defines what is just.
If he were guilty of all of the accusations mentioned in the prior verses, if he had done wrong, and brought harm, and deceived or misdirected in any way, anyone.
Then the deserved punishment is as follows.
The victims have a right to pursue and overtake and convict and punish.
The victims have a right to take his life.
The victims have a right to tread down his life, as an army would trample underfoot a defeated enemy and crush them by running over their bodies with horses or vehicles or boots on walking infantry. To be trampled over and over again until there is nothing left but the dust of their bodies.
The victims, who have been wronged have the right to take his honor, the honor which comes from the world, and tear it apart, to show the world what he is really like, demonstrate to the world the dishonor of his honor. To degrade, to humiliate, to put down in the strongest of terms and fashions.
And so, David demonstrates to us, that sin is totally unworthy, that sin is due nothing less than total deconstruction and destruction, that anyone who sins and keeps their sins is destined to judgment, that all of the honor in and from the world is no honor whatsoever. And, they deserve all that comes to them, and more.
This is not a license for people to judge each other, but the right of God to judge based on Gods principles of right and wrong.
People have the guidelines of due process in a legal court of law, that set out boundaries, preventing abuses, even though there abuses in society.
But in terms of God and truth and the lives that people live, no one can have a relationship with God unless they live by His standards. And no person can attain those standards unless they attain them by means of the process that God has established, namely, salvation through faith, spiritual growth through study, spiritual production through fellowship.
Life goes on and humanity will do what it does. But this verse ends with 'Selah,' a pause in the action. But even as the activities pause, the band plays on, Gods grace continues.
You can come and go and continue doing whatever it is that you do, but Gods plan, Gods rules, Gods principles continue no matter what you try to do to circumvent them.
God is the ultimate judge, and sin and evil are judged thoroughly and completely, and there is no compromise from God when it comes to evil in all of its forms.
