1 And I
saw another strong angel coming down out of heaven, clothed with a cloud; and
the rainbow was upon his head, and his face was like the sun, and his feet like
pillars of fire; NASB
The Bible teaches that
God is a God of love and tremendous patience.
He has waited throughout all of these many generations, so that every
person who lived and every person who would believe in truth, would have that
opportunity, and finally when all have had their chance and have made their
choices, and when there is no other living person to make their choices, then ‘enough’
will be the cry of God, and human rule will come to a swift end.
This is the chapter of
the end of Gods policy of patience, and the end of human rule and human evil
will come to a swift close.
After two devastating onslaughts
of demon hoards, there will come a pause, an interval, before
the next increment of judgments are initiated. This will give all peoples time to pause and
reflect on just what is important in life – their things or their eternal
future.
Between trumpet six and trumpet
seven this interval or pause will bring everyone to their own personal moment
of truth and decision.
From the beginning of the
removal of the seals, God outlined in writing exactly what was going to occur
in the final days of history.
With the trumpets, the
last moments of free decision become obvious as the trumpets announce that
which was written is actually and in fact about to occur. Here it comes.
With the sixth trumpet,
then the pause, then the reality of judgment in all of its power and fury will
become a reality.
Some things we will not
know.The thunders,
and their explanation is withheld from us today. But those folks who will
actually live in that future time, will find out their meaning first hand.
Given what we have already
studied, and given what we are about to study (the seven bowls), we will have a pretty clear picture of massive judgment,
destruction, terror, fear, and death beyond even our imagination. But the seven thunders will be far
worse. So much so, that we are now being
spared the mental picture and anguish of their meaning, purpose and
affect.More on that in verses 3-4.
And now John sees the
beginning of another vision, ‘eido,’ marks the beginning
of another vision.
Before, John saw an angel
descending out of heaven with a message or with instructions, or with actions.
But now John sees a
mighty, ‘ischuros,’ angel. This is an angel which up until now, John has
not yet seen.And the
might implies phenomenal power and authority, far beyond that which has thus
far been revealed.A notable and
dramatic change in the events from what has occurred, to what is about to
occur.
This is an angel, and not
Christ Himself. The word for another, ‘allos’ refers to another of the same type, an angel, just
as those mentioned previously.Christ
does not descend over and over, again and again throughout this period of
history.
This angel comes clothed
with a cloud and a rainbow.
The cloud draped across
his shoulders, is a picture of judgment being brought to bear, Matt 24:30; Mark
13:26; 14:62; and Luke 21:27.
The rainbow is representative
of glorious splendor and promise, Mal. 3:16-4:2
Both judgment and promise
are coming to earth. They have always been available on this earth. For those who reject Christ, thereis judgment,
but there is always the promise of release from judgment through
salvation. That release is but a thought
away in everyone's mind.
His face was like the
sun, which represents the brilliant and radiant glory of God, the source of truth
and judgment and salvation, Ex. 34:29-35.
His feet as pillars of
fire represent the unbending holiness and perfection in destroying all evil, Mal.
4:1.
This angel comes with all
the fullness of the message of the final and permanent end to mans evil rule.
The clock has run out.
