5 And[kai] one[heis] of[ek] the elders[presbuteros] saith [lego] unto me,[moi] Weep[klaio] not:[me] behold,[idou] the Lion[leon] of[on][ek] the tribe[phule] of Juda, [Ioudas] the Root[rhiza] of David,[Dabid] hath prevailed[nikao] to open[anoigo] the book,[biblion] and[kai] to loose[luo] the seven[hepta] seals[sphragis] thereof.[autos]    KJV-Interlinear

5 and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."    NASB

Why is the scroll able to be unsealed, opened and revealed?

Because Christ was successful on the Cross in accomplishing salvation for humanity, and especially for those who accept His work through their faith in Him.

Jesus (in His humanity) is the descendant of David, heir to the throne in the line of the Davidic dynasty, born from the tribe of Judah as represented by the Lion for its symbolism.

Johns tears represented the helplessness of humanity, so small and so irrelevant when compared to all of the universe.

And yet one of the elders, representing the voice of one glorified and fulfilled in the promise of God, said to John, that there was one, who was able to open up the book and complete history as it was intended to be completed.

For without the victory of the Cross, there would be no history for anyone, but only destruction into oblivion. If God did not exist, in all of His power and perfection, who by that power and perfection holds and sustains all things together, then there would be nothing in existence.  And that would leave us all up the proverbial creek (which would not exist).

However, there is one.

The title the Lion, that is from the tribe of Judah, derived from Jacob's blessing on the tribe of Judah, Gen 49:8-10, strong, fierce, and deadly.Out of this tribe would come the Messiah, Heb. 7:14.

Jesus is also described as the root of David, Rev. 22:16, Jer 23:5-6, 33:15-17, Isa. 11:1, 10.

Son of David is used in the Gospels, Matt 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 20:30-31; 21:9,15; 22:42; Mark 12:35.

He is able to loosen the seals, because He was victorious on the Cross by defeating sin, Rom 8:3, death, Heb 2:14-15, and all the forces of hell, Col 2:15; 1 Peter 3:19.  Believers become overcomers through His overcoming, Col 2:13-14; 1 John 5:5.

Of all of the people in history, beginning with Adam and Eve, the first couple in history, there is no one who has the credentials, documented history, and identity that fits these criteria and requirements for ruling, controlling and completing history, other than Jesus Christ.
