You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Ruth 4:16-22
16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him in her lap, and became his nurse. 17 And the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, 'A son has been born to Naomi!' So they named him Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David. 18 Now these are the generations of Perez: to Perez was born Hezron, 19 and to Hezron was born Ram, and to Ram, Amminadab, 20 and to Amminadab was born Nahshon, and to Nahshon, Salmon, 21 and to Salmon was born Boaz, and to Boaz, Obed, 22 and to Obed was born Jesse, and to Jesse, David.
Naomi was once happy and married in Bethlehem. Circumstances changed and her life went down hill. Likewise Boaz was unmarried or if married was now a widower. His former life is not revealed. But the two lives were brought together from out of a famine and many years of separation, between Israel and Moab.
Naomi returned from Moab with Ruth, the daughter-in-law who refused to leave her, not from dependency or insecurity, but from the wisdom of Gods Word which appealed to Ruth and led her to want it more than anything else in life. Her home that she knew, her former friends and family were no match for Gods Word in her life.
Now Ruth has a son. This brings a conclusion to the earlier unhappy life and the beginning to a new and fuller life. The child is named by the neighbors, 'Oh, look at grandma's little helper!', as the ladies all oohed and awed over the new born as thought they had never seen a new born infant before in their entire lives. Women!
And so his name became Obed, servant. His name is listed in the genealogy of David who is the ancestor of Jesus Christ, so his name comes to mean 'servant of God.' Named not by his parents, but by those friends who were around Naomi who was served or taken care of by Ruth, who unselfishly remained with her - 'whither thou go, I will go also.'
Those who follow Gods word in their life have blessing and happiness in their future, regardless of the circumstances they might encounter in life. God is able to overcome all obstacles, because God controls history. No matter what problems we might encounter in life, whether famine, or economic stress, medical difficulties, family loss, or whatever, if one remains true to their study of Gods word, on a daily basis, and therein remain in fellowship and focused on their spiritual growth toward spiritual maturity and maintaining same, then life's circumstances will eventually turn around.
The life of Ruth and Boaz is not limited to their time here on earth, but is extended into eternity as they are currently in Paradise, that is the new Paradise in heaven, after being transferred there in a great, great procession led by Christ, after His work on the Cross.
Elimelech's name is mentioned in the genealogy of Christ by way of Boaz's redemption of Ruth and Naomi, in the giving of the first born in respect to the deceased former husband of Naomi. Elimelech's name meaning 'god is a mighty king' is now a reference to a source out of which greatness will proclaim victory at some time in the future (the Cross). But, we cannot get the cart before the horse, first there must come the servant (grandma's little helper, the one who would help not only come to the aid of those who will be born in the future but to those who have lived since the ancients out of the garden), the first advent of Christ, who came to planet earth to be a unique and perfect sacrifice, in substitution for mankind, and the eternal redeemer for all those who accept this gift of Gods purchase of man out of the bondage of sin and death. Sin and death which mankind cannot and will never be able to defeat.
The people in naming the genealogy, begin with Perez, the son of Judah by Tamar who pretended to be a harlot and fooled Judah, that out of sin (the generation that would go into slavery in Egypt) will come redemption, that out of dishonor (the struggle of man through those many centuries of fighting for freedom and taking the promised land where man really never accomplished freedom from sin or death), will come the honor of an eternal dynasty beginning with the kingship of David, and being secured by Christ upon His single victory on the Cross. There will be ten generations from slavery to the beginning of a dynasty, from Perez to David and thus the completion of an era demonstrating mans incapability to do for himself that which is necessary in order to continue forever in a relationship with God. Only through Gods grace and guidance are we able to rise out of the pit we find ourselves in, in this world. To reject God or merely to ignore God in our daily lives is the quintessence of stupidity. None of us can no what circumstances lay before us tomorrow or next year. None of us can control any of the events of this world let alone many of the events in our own personal lives. Only through remaining consistent and faithful in our studies in Gods Word will be have total control over our destinies, and in that we really transfer total control of our lives to God and His divine wisdom. We then, merely sit back and enjoy the fruits of His labor.
