Ruth 4:13-15
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife, and he went in to her. And the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 Then the women said to Naomi, 'Blessed is the LORD who has not left you without a redeemer today, and may his name become famous in Israel. 15 May he also be to you a restorer of life and a sustainer of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you and is better to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.'
For those who are positive toward God, the Lord will raise them up out of the dust of poverty, and make them a seat among the princes, Psa. 113:7-8. So it is with Ruth. Once she was in a position in Moab where a decision had to be made. Either to remain in Moab with those whom she was familiar, or leave that environment and go to a place where she had never been, and trust in the promises which she had heard Naomi teach - 'your God will be my God.' Ruth learned from Naomi.
Naomi had taught her faith, yet Naomi had lost her entire family. She was not penniless, but she was in a state of poverty just the same. How could anyone trust in her counsel? Most folks would look at her predicament and tell her that she was foolish to believe in a God that would place her in such a position. After all there was a famine in Israel. There was a history of turmoil. What kind of faith could lean on that kind of track record? Such is the attitude of those who are negative and superficial. They believe only what they can see, ear, feel, taste, smell. They rely on their senses and that becomes their short sighted trap in life. God uses the simple and foolish things in life as stumbling blocks for those who would be wise in their own eyes.
Ruth made the right decision and returned to Bethlehem, and there became the wife of Boaz, a Prince of Judah, the redeemer who would provide her with a means of escape from her poverty and despair. They did not shack up. They did not 'try it out' for a while to see if they were compatible. They did not combine households to 'save' money on monthly expenses. They were honorable and responsible, and they were married in a public ceremony. If something is worthwhile it is worth doing under the eye of the public. Only those who are dishonest with themselves and with others, will do their business in secret under the veil of deceit. Public notices, public filings, written contracts and the like are good examples of entering into an arrangement that is open and honest, containing all of the ingredients that two persons have agreed to, such that if there were ever a dispute, then a third party could easily settle the dispute in accordance with the original agreement. This Enron affair is a classic example of dishonesty, deceit, fraud and cover-up. People had responsibilities to report honest financial numbers both to investors and to various authorities, yet they played shell games and musical chairs as they attempted to build an empire out of cards, concerned more with their personal compensation positions rather than being concerned with their responsibilities to owners and employees.
God does everything in the public view. The angels were created and after that God created the universe and all of history. There are numerous witnesses to all of the events in history from Satan's down fall until now. Satan and the sinful nature of mankind seek darkness for their works of deception, to get ahead at the expense of everyone else. Often people avoid their responsibilities in marriage looking more to their own interests and thus marriages fail, or relationships fail. More often people don't even know what it is that they want. They just know that they are not happy, and they become restless and then they make the wrong decisions in life - selfishness or divorce or breakup. They should be making the right decisions in life and study their Bibles daily and grow up. The world is full of adults who are spiritually immature. They make bad decisions and they refuse to be held accountable for those decisions. 'I didn't know,' when they should have known. 'It's someone else's fault,' when it was they who were making the decisions and took their actions.
Ruth was a mature woman. She did nothing improper when she approached the man, Boaz. Their courtship was brief if at all. But when two mature individuals come together, then time is not a factor. When two immature individuals come together, then no amount of time for getting acquainted will solve their self centeredness. People need to grow up before taking on relationships with other people. The odds of success will be greatly improved. If the couple are both spiritually mature, then their successful relationship is virtually guaranteed. Ruth knew her role as a wife. Boaz knew his role as a husband. There was no inordinate competition between them. Neither of them had something to prove to the other or to themselves. Neither were insecure in their self esteem. Neither embarrassed the other in public, 'let no one know that the woman was here,' in an effort to artificially put down the other in order to gratify their own ego.
In all of this, God brought all things together. From the famine to the death of the husbands, to the teaching of Bible doctrine by Naomi, to her return, to the selection of the field for gleaning. Many independent events occurred in the lives of both parties (events that neither Boaz nor Ruth had any control over) and they ended up in each others arms.
Boaz will have a good reputation in Bethlehem, but more than that, his descendent, Jesus Christ, will have an eternally great reputation, far exceeding that of any created being. He, Christ, will be the restorer not only of ones older life, but of ones eternal life. And as for Ruth, she is better than seven sons in that she is the mother who will perpetuate the 'woman's' seed that will lead eventually to the virgin pregnancy of Mary, and the birth of Jesus Christ.
God 'enabled' her to conceive. Boaz was the father and an older man. Ruth could have chased after younger and more virile men, but she instead chose Boaz as her husband. And God was gracious to both Boaz and Ruth in providing a pregnancy that otherwise would not have occurred. Ruth loved Naomi because of the Bible doctrine she taught her. That love, based on her spiritual growth, brought her to Boaz and a life of happiness and fulfillment.
