Ruth 3:6-13
6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did according to all that her mother-in-law had commanded her. 7 When Boaz had eaten and drunk and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of grain; and she came secretly, and uncovered his feet and lay down. 8 And it happened in the middle of the night that the man was startled and bent forward; and behold, a woman was lying at his feet. 9 And he said, 'Who are you?' And she answered, 'I am Ruth your maid. So spread your covering over your maid, for you are a close relative.' 10 Then he said, 'May you be blessed of the LORD, my daughter. You have shown your last kindness to be better than the first by not going after young men, whether poor or rich. 11 And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you whatever you ask, for all my people in the city know that you are a woman of excellence. 12 And now it is true I am a close relative; however, there is a relative closer than I. 13 Remain this night, and when morning comes, if he will redeem you, good; let him redeem you. But if he does not wish to redeem you, then I will redeem you, as the LORD lives. Lie down until morning.'
We should clear up a few words here so that the passage will be clearer. Boaz was eating and drinking. Eating, 'akal', to consume a meal. Drunk, 'shathah', to consume, to drink a liquid. This has nothing to do with alcohol. Boaz was merely eating his dinner. Merry, 'yatab', a sense of happiness due to success. Secretly, 'lat' to be very quiet so as not to disturb. Afraid, 'charad' to startle awake from ones sleep. Covering, 'kanaph', a bed garment, a blanket, a flap.
Boaz is in the winnowing shack. He has had a very good year. The sheds are full of grain, and he is celebrating with a meal. Something like you would do if you were to get a very nice Christmas bonus, say equivalent to four months pay. A nice fat pay check. You would most likely go out with your family and have a great dinner at a good restaurant, a celebration because of your good fortune.
So it is with Boaz. He had a good year, and he is 'merry'. He is very happy and in good spirits. He is not drunk. Of course he may have had some wine with his meal, or whatever his favorite beverage might have been, but he was not drunk.
Boaz has had a long day. The workers have gone home from the evening work. The work of separating the grain from the chaff was usually done during the evening breeze. A better time to do this type of work.
Ruth went to where the work was being done and waited until all of the workers had gone home. Furthermore, she waited until Boaz had finished his meal, and had laid down to sleep. Then she quietly, so as not to awaken him, laid down at his feet and waited.
Boaz woke up with a start. He wouldn't normally find someone at his feet, let alone a woman. She identifies herself and mentions the redeemer kinsman law. They had a conversation. They discussed her wishes, Naomi's wishes, and on short notice he had to formulate a plan to accomplish everyone's goals. Another kin, closer to Naomi than he was still alive and therefore had the first right to the redemption process.
Ruth could not go home in the dark of night - too dangerous. Nor did Boaz want her to stay after dawn - her honor as a lady was at stake. There was no fooling around during the night, but gossip, once it begins, is hard to stop no matter what the truth may be.
Ruth will sleep the rest of the night and go home early in the morning. When Ruth returns home, she will give Naomi the grain that Boaz sends her home with - a little gesture for the idea Naomi had, and the opportunity for Boaz and Ruth.
Spiritually we are faced with a formal process in life. To be saved we must believe in Christ. Death and eternal destruction awaits us if we do not follow the law of salvation (believe in Christ) precisely. We have only one redeemer. Actually we have two possible owners. The first being death and eternal destruction, and the second owner is Christ, who in turn gives us freedom. Death perpetuates our slavery forever.
We do not have to be present at our redemption. None of us were alive two thousand years ago when Christ went to the Cross and paid the price for our redemption. Ruth likewise will not be present when Boaz secures the right to redeem her as well as those who are with her - Naomi. Ruth follows all Boaz's instructions. Boaz states that he is willing to buy Naomi's property, and assume the responsibility for Naomi as well as marry Ruth. Both are in agreement as to what they both desire. Neither is being coerced into something that they do not want.
