Isaiah 33:9

9 The earth ['erets] mourneth ['abal] and languisheth ['amal]: Lebanon [Labanown] is ashamed [chapher] and hewn down [qamal]: Sharon [Sharown] is like a wilderness [`arabah]; and Bashan [Bashan] and Carmel [Karmel] shake off [na`ar] their fruits.   KJV-Interlinear

9 The land mourns and languishes; Lebanon is confounded and withers away; Sharon is like a desert, and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves. ESV

The four places named within this verse, are located at far points from each other, and therefore describe the extent of the destruction that is going to occur. In other words, all of the land will be subject to destruction, and no part of the land will escape destruction.

Lebanon, was always known for its vast cedar forests, and now it is described as a place of calamity and confusion.

Sharon, was well known for its beauty, and now is described as a desert or wilderness.

Bashan and Carmel, were known for their phenomenal production, and now they are described as having no production.

In other words, the entire land will encounter phenomenal economic collapse, as well as the destruction of the natural beauties of the land.

When the spiritual life is ignored, and man fails in his relationship with God, whether on a world, national, or personal basis, emptiness and loss and destruction always follow.

The world around you can be prosperous, while you fall into despair because of your failed spiritual life.

You, with a successful spiritual life, can enjoy prosperity, while the world around you falls into despair and destruction, because of the failed spiritual lives of society.

Your life does not depend on the attributes or resources of this world.

Your life depends on your relationship with God, and that relationship develops as a result of a daily Bible study.


Study [by instruction],
to show thyself approved [spiritually mature]
unto God,
a workman [student]
that need not be ashamed [ignorant],
rightly dividing [learning, understanding, discerning]
the word of truth [Bible doctrine].

If you can dream and not make dreams your master,
If you can think and not let thoughts narrow your views,
If you can meet triumph with disaster equally,
If you can learn and see your full meaning and purpose in life,
Then you can believe in Christ, learn Bible doctrine, and grow far beyond the potential that God has prepared for you.
