Daily Bible Study
8 The highways [macillah] lie waste [shamem], the wayfaring man [`abar]['orach] ceaseth [shabath]: he hath broken [parar] the covenant [bariyth], he hath despised [ma'ac] the cities [`iyr], he regardeth [chashab] no man ['enowsh]. KJV-Interlinear
8 The highways lie waste; the traveler ceases. Covenants are broken; cities are despised; there is no regard for man. ESV
The destruction that has come, as described in the previous verse, is explained here, as to why that destruction has come. With a dual meaning, this verse describes the symptoms of man’s failure, and the results of that failure, with respect to the spiritual life.
Highways laying and waste, refer to both, literal highways where there was once heavy traffic and active commerce. And, it refers to spiritual highways, which describe the interaction man has with God within a functional spiritual life.
When the spiritual life ceases, then the traffic, so to speak, between man and God, becomes like empty highways, carrying no traffic, no blessing, no spiritual commerce, as it were.
When man fails in the spiritual life, the carnal or physical life here on earth soon follows in failure.
Thus, commerce, economies, the normal way of life, grinds to a halt.
When the spiritual life fails, then the regard for life, fades away. We can see examples of this in some religions, or even political movements, wherein there is no regard for life or property.
Covenants, or contracts with life, namely regarding right and wrong, and so forth, are broken. People cease to have an interest in their responsibilities and obligations of life. They pursue instead, the drives of the sin nature, which has a total disregard for life, and the total disregard for the rights of other people, looking to self, with only selfish interests.
And when society is saturated with this type of attitude, then destruction, even massive destruction, soon follows.
Study [by instruction],
to show thyself approved [spiritually mature]
unto God,
a workman [student]
that need not be ashamed [ignorant],
rightly dividing [learning, understanding, discerning]
the word of truth [Bible doctrine].
If you can dream and not make dreams your master,
If you can think and not let thoughts narrow your views,
If you can meet triumph with disaster equally,
If you can learn and see your full meaning and purpose in life,
Then you can believe in Christ, learn Bible doctrine, and grow far beyond the potential that God has prepared for you.
These studies are a part of the massive daily study web site at DailyBibeStudy.Org, and are written, so that you can come to Christ if you have not done so already, and therefore not be lost forever.
And if you have already believed in Christ, then these studies are written so you can learn and understand and grow in your spiritual life, so that you can come to the full knowledge of Christ, so that you can fulfill your meaning and purpose in life as God intended for you, and so you can qualify for a phenomenal eternal reward which you will have forever.
To ignore this opportunity to pursue a daily study means you will be incomplete, unfulfilled and you will lose out, big time.
The Daily Bible Study is online, making it possible as never before in all of human history, to advance in ones relationship with God, through Christ, and to complete yourself beyond your imagination.
But you have to decide to make that commitment. No one else can study for you. You have to do that yourself.
