23 Thy
princes [sar] are rebellious, [carar] and
companions [chaber] of thieves: [gannab] every one loveth ['ahab]
gifts, [shachad] and followeth [radaph] after rewards: [shalmon]
they judge [shaphat] not the fatherless, [yathowm] neither doth the cause [riyb] of the widow ['almanah] come [bow'] unto them. KJV-Interlinear
23 Your
rulers are rebels, And companions of thieves; Everyone loves a bribe, And
chases after rewards. They do not defend the orphan, Nor does the widow's plea
come before them. NASB
All leaders in history come into power because the general population elects them into power, allows them to take power, or is not strong enough to prevent them from seizing power.
The leadership of a nation is a good barometer measuring the spiritual state of a population.
And while no one but God, can examine every citizen of a nation, the leadership is a good measure of the nations spiritual state.
A spiritually weak leadership indicates a spiritually weak nation.
Weakness does not start from the top and work its way down. Weakness is the sum total of the population from the bottom up.
When leadership, celebrityship, judgeship and or the legal and informational systems are all described as weak, corrupt, dishonest thieves, easily bribed, unfair, seeking personal gain at the expense of the general public, dishonest in dealing with people, having complete disregard for those who are helpless, then that nation is indeed in deep spiritual trouble.
That is why the economy is weak (prior verse) and production of the nation is substandard (prior verse), and all of this because the entire or a great percentage of the nation has turned away from doctrine (several of the prior verses).
As goes spirituality, so goes the nation. Disinterest yields trouble and corruption. Intense interest yields strength, quality, and blessing.
As goes the interest in Christ, so goes history. Jesus Christ is the only true key to history.
And disinterest in Christ means weakness in the spiritual lives of a collective nation, and that means suffering for most, as leadership and those in positions of influence drive the nation to its ruin.
