Phil. 3:1
Lesson # Phil. 3:1
Study Material - Phil. 3:1
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Phil. 3:1
1 Finally [loipon], my [mou] brethren [adelphos], rejoice [chairo] in [en] the Lord [kurios]. To write [grapho] the same things [autos] to you [humin], to me [emoi] indeed [men] is not [ou] grievous [okneros], but [de] for you [humin] it is safe [asphales]. KJV-Interlinear 1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things again is no trouble to me, and it is a safeguard for you. NASB
Paul begins to close his letter with a description of the goal of our Christian life, our spiritual life, which is attaining the perfection, or in other words, advancing to spiritual maturity. Paul does not see it as a burden to write over and over again the same things which he has taught before. People need repetition in order to learn Bible doctrine. But more than that, we need repetition of Bible teaching in order to keep the Biblical viewpoint always before us.
I have noticed that, though there are many who have followed this Bible study for some length of time, there are many more who have either just signed on to the Bible study, or have been on it for perhaps a few weeks or even a few months. The people with the shorter exposure do not have the benefit of the many lessons which the longer term people have had. To go back into even the archives would take a person a couple of years to read, let alone digest, and that would not be a good study format anyway. So we repeat concepts, over and over again. Sometimes we document those concepts if we happen to be on a passage which directly applies. Other times we summarize them, knowing that their documentation will come out in due course.
Just as Paul has learned from his ministry, that there are those who will listen and agree, and there are those who will not listen, and will disagree. This study is no different, some readers agree and some do not. And that is every ones right. But we all are faced with repetition, whether it is for the benefit of newer people just entering the Bible study, or whether it is for our own continual exposure which helps us to keep Bible doctrine before our own eyes.
And that is the key to spiritual advancement and strength. It is a 'safeguard for you'. As Paul states in verse one. Keeping Bible doctrine before us requires a commitment of time and repetition on a daily basis. We can either do it on our own, or we can subscribe to some mechanism out there in the world which will provide the lessons for us. No one twists our arm. No one threatens us or intimidates us in such a way as to force us to read our Bibles. We come to the conclusion on our own as to whether or not we even need Bible doctrine in our lives. And of course we should know by now that there are repercussions to either choice we make regarding our personal Bible study commitment or lack of it. To be positive toward Bible study means blessings on the horizon for us. To ignore Bible study means misery on the horizon. God never forces any one into either decision.
To study the Bible, as Paul states in a later verse, 'in the Spirit of God', which means being in fellowship, a concept that we have gone over many times, gives us a place of residence while living in this world. Think of it as living inside Gods Palace, in a place of security and blessing. Being out of fellowship means living outside of that Palace, out in the jungle with no protection and at the mercy of the jungle. Go visit the jungle in Africa sometime and take a walk outside, alone, at night, with no weapon, no protection. Think you will survive until morning? If you do, I'll bet you have to change your shorts in the morning! But now try living out in the jungle all of your life with no protection, etc. What are your chances? Zero. Sooner or later you'll be lunch for something out there. And all the time prior to that lunch date, for which you are the main course, you'll live in fear and anxiety, and a dozen other emotions which are not positive.
So hearing Bible doctrine over and over, again and again is for our individual protection and to safeguard us by keeping doctrine always in the forefront of our minds. Beware the dogs, etc. will have to wait until tomorrow's lesson. But needless to say there are distractions and manipulators out there who will stop at nothing to get you away from your daily Bible study.
