Phil. 2:19-30

Lesson # Phil. 2:19-30
Study Material - Phil. 2:19-30

You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Phil. 2:19-30

19 But [de] I trust [elpizo] in [en] the Lord [kurios] Jesus [Iesous] to send [pempo] Timotheus [Timotheos] shortly [tacheos] unto you [humin], that [hina] I also [kago] may be of good comfort [eupsucheo], when I know [ginosko] your [humon] state [peri].
20 For [gar] I have [echo] no man [oudeis] likeminded [isopsuchos], who [hostis] will naturally [gnesios] care [merimnao] for your [humon] state [peri].
21 For [gar] all [pas] seek [zeteo] their own [heautou], not [ou] the things which are [ho] Jesus [Iesous] Christ's [Christos].
22 But [de] ye know [ginosko] the proof [dokime] of him [autos], that [hoti], as [hos] a son [teknon] with the father [pater], he hath served [douleuo] with [sun] me [emoi] in [eis] the gospel [euaggelion].
23 Him [men] [touton] therefore [oun] I hope [elpizo] to send [pempo] presently [exautes], so soon as [hos] I [an] shall see [apeido] how [peri] it will go with me [eme].
24 But [de] I trust [peitho] in [en] the Lord [kurios] that [hoti] I [erchomai] also [kai] myself [autos] shall come [erchomai] shortly [tacheos].
25 Yet [de] I supposed [hegeomai] it necessary [anagkaios] to send [pempo] to [pros] you [humas] Epaphroditus [Epaphroditos], my [mou] brother [adelphos], and [kai] companion in labour [sunergos], and [kai] fellowsoldier [sustratiotes], but [de] your [humon] messenger [apostolos], and [kai] he that ministered [leitourgos] to my [mou] wants [chreia].
26 For [epeide] he [en] longed after [epipotheo] you [humas] all [pas], and [kai] was full of heaviness [ademoneo], because [dioti] that ye had heard [akouo] that [hoti] he had been sick [astheneo].
27 For [gar] indeed [kai] he was sick [astheneo] nigh [paraplesion] unto death [thanatos]: but [alla] God [theos] had mercy [eleeo] on him [autos]; and [de] not [ou] on him [autos] only [monon], but [alla] on me [eme] also [kai], lest [hina me] I should have [echo] sorrow [lupe] upon [epi] sorrow [lupe].
28 I sent [pempo] him [autos] therefore [oun] the more carefully [spoudaioteros], that [hina], when ye see [eido] him [autos] again [palin], ye may rejoice [chairo], and that I [kago] may be [o] the less sorrowful [alupoteros].
29 Receive [prosdechomai] him [autos] therefore [oun] in [en] the Lord [kurios] with [meta] all [pas] gladness [chara]; and [kai] hold [echo] such [toioutos] in reputation [entimos]:
30 Because [hoti] for [dia] the work [ergon] of Christ [Christos] he was nigh [eggizo] unto [mechri] death [thanatos], not regarding [parabouleuomai] his life [psuche], to [hina] supply [anapleroo] your [humon] lack [husterema] of service [leitourgia] toward [pros] me [me]. KJV-Interlinear

19 But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you shortly, so that I also may be encouraged when I learn of your condition. 20 For I have no one else of kindred spirit who will genuinely be concerned for your welfare. 21 For they all seek after their own interests, not those of Christ Jesus. 22 But you know of his proven worth that he served with me in the furtherance of the gospel like a child serving his father. 23 Therefore I hope to send him immediately, as soon as I see how things go with me; 24 and I trust in the Lord that I myself also shall be coming shortly. 25 But I thought it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger and minister to my need; 26 because he was longing for you all and was distressed because you had heard that he was sick. 27 For indeed he was sick to the point of death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I have sent him all the more eagerly in order that when you see him again you may rejoice and I may be less concerned about you. 29 Therefore receive him in the Lord with all joy, and hold men like him in high regard; 30 because he came close to death for the work of Christ, risking his life to complete what was deficient in your service to me. NASB

Paul closes this chapter with the encouraging commitment of sending two ministers to the Philippians. Paul himself cannot go because of his imprisonment, and the outcome of that was still uncertain. But there are many believers as well as unbelievers who are positive toward doctrine or will be positive, and they need the communication of the gospel and doctrine made available to them on an ongoing basis. We all need it of course.

God teaches us that throughout all generations, and despite the circumstances of our lives, Bible doctrine will be available. Not the imprisonment of our teacher, not the illness of our teacher, not the geographical distance of our teacher, nothing can prevent doctrine from getting to those who are really positive.

No government in the world can prevent the flow of Bible teaching, and Rome was pretty powerful at that time. Chaos in a country, such as apparently occurring in present day Yugoslavia, cannot prevent the communication of Bible doctrine. Storms, disasters, natural events cannot prevent the communication of Bible doctrine.

So, though we live in sinful generations, and there are always problems and potential barriers thrown at us from all possible directions. We should not worry about our access to Bible doctrine. If we remain positive, then doctrine will always be there for us.

As we advance to maturity, and arrive in a mature status, we receive a certain degree of independence from this world. We have no doubt made many notes along the way and can certainly refer to them in our ongoing study, but the important notes are those that are resident in your head, in your soul. Those bits of information are available to you by bringing them to your attention from your memory. You recall them and they become a source of confidence and comfort. As you learn more and more doctrine your spiritual growth will stabilize. Likewise you are less likely to be fooled by those who come along and attempt to teach concepts that are not in accordance with Bible doctrine. As verse 21 states, there are many who represent themselves and experts in Bible teaching, but they really have their own agendas. 'Sell all you have and give the proceeds to me, and you will be loved in heaven'. Now you know that this is a false concept, and the work of a con artist. But surprisingly many people fall for this stuff. Of course there are other misleading teachings which are more subtle, as well as more obvious. Your best defense is wisdom from Bible doctrine in your soul.

Paul is sending Timothy, and Epaphroditus to continue the teaching of Bible doctrine. Both are removed from the Philippians at the moment, but they will be available soon enough. But do not depend on the individual for you Bible instruction. God will provide communicators. The issue is the availability of Bible study material, not the availability of a specific person. We can live all our lives and get used to one person, but throughout our lives we will most likely be instructed by more than one person. Soon Paul will be removed, but his written words survived him. Timothy and Epaphroditus will come and go, but their written and spoken words will remain. Every generation will have access to Bible teachers. God is faithful and will not ever let you down, so long as you remain positive. But also, remember the warning from earlier in the chapter, do not go negative. Do not get lax in your Bible study, because if you withdraw from God, He may withdraw from you, and your troubles will compound dramatically. No one needs that kind of trouble. Therefore continue in doctrine with fear, or better stated, with commitment and the knowledge that you will have security and blessing in your life.

Bible instruction will always be available to help you to achieve the completion of your life. Without Bible doctrine in your soul, your life is incomplete and that incompleteness creates a vacuum in your soul which draws in all the junk that this world has to offer. Better to fill your soul with good knowledge rather than bad.
