You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth. 2 John 1:9 9 Whosoever [pas] transgresseth [parabaino], and [kai] abideth [meno] not [me] in [en] the doctrine [didache] of Christ [Christos], hath [echo] not [ou] God [theos]. He that abideth [meno] in [en] the doctrine [didache] of Christ [Christos], he [houtos] hath [echo] both [kai] the Father [pater] and [kai] the Son [huios]. KJV-Interlinear 9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. NASB Going 'too far' also carries the connotation of advancing too far, or advancing beyond the truth. It also means to turn aside or to turn away from. The object of this verse is the believer in Christ. John has just warned about the possible loss of receiving a full measure of blessing if the believer fades away form doctrine. This not only is a reference to those who become indifferent toward God and doctrine, but it is also a reference to those who go beyond doctrine and to those who try to invent a 'better' doctrine. Gods word is the foundation of ones thinking. Your thinking is the foundation of your decisions and actions. All this leads to the morality or behavior of a person in society. The Bible is the foundation and source of all truthful and correct morality. When people try to go beyond Gods Word, then they begin to invent and manufacture a better morality or a better spiritual life, or a better means of access to God. This is where many Christian groups (as well as non-Christian groups) get into trouble with tongues and spirituality and such things like that. All religions (not Christian) have their own invention of God and how to access Him. Some religions do not even recognize God and they try to invent, within their own imagination, a path to a higher plane of existence usually by means of living a good life. Or trying to improve in ones status in this travel through living multiple lives through reincarnation. All of these of course are rejections of the Bible, of God, and especially of Jesus Christ and the Cross. But anti-Christianity does not stop there. People come up with acceptable social behaviors which are convenient to the life style that they happen to like. Some believe that they have the right to gossip and to condemn others. News organizations believe that they have the right to lead society in a direction of their choice. Some folks have insecurity issues and so they will do things that make them feel more secure. Others are afraid of dealing with the opposite sex and so they turn to their own gender peers for their social interactions. Some turn to crime to get what they feel they deserve. This list of departures goes on and on. In every case, any departure from the truth, whether an outright rejection of it or whether some convenient modification of what God teaches, are all lies and a part of a pattern of life which will lead you to failure in your spiritual life. You may be saved, but any believer who disobeys Gods commands, will not grow up spiritually. That results in loss of blessing. You never lose the right to go to heaven. But in heaven there will be pay checks and bonus checks, and your pay envelope might just be empty. Living your life within the defined teaching of the Bible will advance you in the proper way to spiritual maturity and to the winners circle of life and beyond. Living your life under the pretenses of spirituality but according to some compromised beliefs which you wish to pursue (and of which are not scriptural) will lead you to failure in your spiritual life and loss of reward in eternity. You can learn the Bible. Anyone can read and even memorize the entire Bible. Even Satan knows the Bible inside and out. But knowing it does not produce spiritual growth. You have to make Gods Word real in your life, and that only happens when you turn those doctrines into reality by living by them. That is when the phrase 'God and Christ in you' becomes real and true in your life. Anything else is a fraud.
