You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
1 John 5:20-21
20 And [de] we know [eido] that [hoti] the Son [huios] of God [theos] is come [heko], and [kai] hath given [didomi] us [hemin] an understanding [dianoia], that [hina] we may know [ginosko] him that is true [alethinos], and [kai] we are [esmen] in [en] him that is true [alethinos], even in [en] his [autos] Son [huios] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos]. This [houtos] is [esti] the true [alethinos] God [theos], and [kai] eternal [aionios] life [zoe].
21 Little children [teknion], keep [phulasso] yourselves [heautou] from [apo] idols [eidolon]. Amen [amen]. KJV-Interlinear
20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding, in order that we might know Him who is true, and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, guard yourselves from idols. NASB
John sums up this first book with the final assertion that 'we know' the details of the spiritual life. Those details come to us from God direct through our study process of the scriptures, and our obedience to the study process which God has authorized - ie. residence in fellowship, maintaining a daily study, maintaining an open mind, listening, learning, applying what we learn to our daily life, understanding what we have learned, being obedient to Gods commands and mandates, and finally gaining His wisdom from this whole process - the circle of wisdom which we have called this in our study.
The Christian life is not one of superstition, no one of human invention, not one derived form the world, not one mandated by legislation, not one taught in philosophy, or of fanaticism, or of wishful thinking, or popular opinion.
God gives us the entire learning apparatus (human spirit, Holy Spirit) through which we can know with a certainty that what we are studying is real and true, and that our lives in Christ are true and certain.
The world has only invention from the imagination which is detached from reality and is no more than a lie meant to deceive and destroy.
By this teaching (the word of God) we can and do know that the Son of God has come and through Him we have eternal life and even more than that, we have an opportunity to have far more in the next life (as well as having a better current life) by merely complying to His commands. Commands which are not burdensome nor intrusive in anyone's life.
Idols are anything which might become a distraction of your attention away from Gods word. Idols do not have to be little statues or little trinkets on a necklace. An idol can be a pattern of life or a pattern of thought in which you place your belief more than that of the Bible.
The Bible gives you all of the necessary information to help you identify truth from the lies of life. Remember that there is only the light and the darkness. If you are not in a daily study from within the sphere of fellowship, then you are operating in the darkness of this world. Darkness gives you nothing.
Sooner or later as you begin to grow up spiritually you will be able to identify and discern the ludicrous things that you hear on the television or on the radio or in the printed publications which inundate the world. As you become more and more aware of these things, then you will wonder how mankind could have possibly remained in existence for so long a time. That alone is a miracle from God. Then you will see more and more the depths of the grace of God and the tremendous extent of His mercies which He has extended to man in general and to you specifically.
Therefore, guard your spiritual life as though it is the only thing of value which you have. Because it is.
