You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

1 John 5:18-19

18 We know [eido] that [hoti] whosoever [pas] is born [gennao] of [ek] God [theos] sinneth [hamartano] not [ou]; but [alla] he that is begotten [gennao] of [ek] God [theos] keepeth [tereo] himself [heautou], and [kai] that wicked one [poneros] toucheth [haptomai] him [autos] not [ou].
19 And we know [eido] that [hoti] we are [esmen] of [ek] God [theos], and [kai] the whole [holos] world [kosmos] lieth [keimai] in [en] wickedness [poneros]. KJV-Interlinear

18 We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him and the evil one does not touch him. 19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. NASB

Can we be certain of any principles in life? Yes, according to John in this text. 'We know,' is the phrase of that certainty. We know because we have been told by the ultimate authority of the universe - God. Apart from God, there is no other authority who provides truth.

Being born of God gives each believer certain advantages. First, once a person has believed in Christ and is therefore born again, saved, made born into the family of God, then the single unpardonable sin of unbelief no longer applies. Once a person has believed in Christ, then one cannot undo his own previous belief. No one can turn the clock back and undo their spiritual birth. Just as you cannot turn the clock back and undo your physical birth from your mother. Once born, always born.

Second, then if you monitor your own life, and confess your sins on a regular basis, to God the Father, then your status in fellowship is one which is free of sin. In that environment you do not sin.

Of course when you do commit a sin you are immediately out of fellowship. So in that respect you can and inevitably will sin in your life. The issue here is not what your sin is, but what are you going to do about your 'out of fellowship' status. Unfortunately most people ignore their spiritual status, so they spend very little time in fellowship.

Many folks might get into fellowship by accident, such as a person who is hurting badly in life because of his or her circumstances, and they turn to God in prayer for help and inadvertently state (confess) that they are sinners and worthless individuals, so their prayer of petition for help by accident, not by their own design, gets through to God, and that prayer receives an answer.

Interesting as that might seem. But then life continues and they sooner or later sin, and are out of fellowship again. But at least they received some benefit from being in fellowship, if even for a moment.

In the above example people can receive help even if by accident. But the Word of God is designed for us 'to know.' We are not meant to be here on earth with a chance opportunity for some form of a good life. We are here for the certainty of a great life. And anyone who does not know Gods will, has no excuse for not knowing. 'To know' is only a daily study away. Who among us is not capable of having a daily Bible study in their life?

And again, John reminds us that we live in either of two environments - Satan's, or Gods. There is no third choice. So if you live your life in virtual indifference or inconsistency to Gods commands, then you are really living your life in conformance with the pattern of life of Satan. But then if you are indifferent toward God, you probably don't care about that, nor would you accept that as fact.

The 'whole world' is a reference to the principles and practices which are in opposition to God. Since the world is of the devil, then you are either trapped in the world by virtue of your negative attitude toward God, or you are freed from the world, by your compliance to Gods will. In either case, the choice is yours.

John herein teaches us that 'we know' the facts and realities of life. How? By our daily study. How else would you learn Gods word? The options for your future are always there before you.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
