Proverbs 4:10

10 Hear, my son, and accept my sayings, And the years of your life will be many. 11 I have directed you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in upright paths. 12 When you walk, your steps will not be impeded; And if you run, you will not stumble. 13 Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life.

Proverbs 4:10

Hear and accept, are repeated words. Doctrine is so important to our daily lives, the Bible repeats this command over and over again. Son is a child, not an adult. God is the teacher, the adult as it were, teaching us, His children. If you have ever had small children, you have found yourself repeating your instructions to them. Often you probably wondered if they were brain damaged at birth, or perhaps defective in some way. And of course they take after your spouse.

Well so too, God repeats to us, His commands. Drilling them in if possible. And to those who are patient and willing, His commands are heard and never resented. But to those who are hard headed, Gods commands are not only rejected but resented as well.

The child, the son, is just that. Having no rights, no portfolio. The child is to listen and learn and keep quiet, until he develops some worthy thoughts in his own soul. Something that smacks of mental activity that indicates that there is something other than an alien in there, or just dead empty space. A little tap on the head!

Accept, means just that. We do not accept everything blindly, however. We listen, evaluate, compare what we hear with other things we have heard, and God will make the truth apparent and clear. We then have to decide to accept or reject what we have heard. Accepting Bible doctrine gives us benefits, including a long life. Rather a life longer than we would have otherwise have had. God sets or limits in history. If we reject doctrine we might not make those limits. If we accept doctrine, God promises extended limits.

God leads by means of doctrine, by wisdom, which directs our paths in our daily lives, assuming that we choose to follow doctrine. As we advance in our daily activities, in our chosen careers, we won’t stumble, we won’t fall. This stumbling and falling is a permanent failure which occurs if we reject doctrine. In this world we will encounter problems, but God always provides us with options and a way out of our problem.

Sometimes, simply patience and waiting something out is the best solution, like when someone gets mad at you. You simply remain silent and let their anger run out of steam. Other problems give rise to other solutions.

Our daily lives depend on doctrine, for many things in life and in eternity. Guard wisdom, for she is your life, is the moral of this proverb, if not life itself. Hold on to doctrine as you would hold on to your pocket book when it is full of cash, and you are out on vacation in a foreign place. Doctrine is more important than that money which you will spend anyway. Doctrine provided it in the first place.
