Proverbs 4:1

1 Hear, O sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention that you may gain understanding, 2 For I give you sound teaching; Do not abandon my instruction. 3 When I was a son to my father, Tender and the only son in the sight of my mother, 4 Then he taught me and said to me, ‘Let your heart hold fast my words; Keep my commandments and live;

Proverbs 4:1

Hear, requires a positive attitude and your attention to listening to what is being taught. Hear instruction. And hear it so you will gain understanding. Children should listen to their parents, to their teachers, to the coach, or whomever is teaching them. A person can not get along in life if he doesn’t listen to instruction. You have to be teachable, willing to listen, in order to learn and grow up.

We all should listen to the teaching to the Word of God, because it is instruction for life. You may learn math and writing in school which certainly helps you function in this world, but Bible doctrine teaches you how to survive in life and prepare yourself for a relationship with God, and for eternity.

But you cannot learn anything unless you want to learn, first of all, and then listen and learn the information that is being taught. Next you have to apply it to life in order to make it real in your life.

God provides sound instruction. The world provides sometimes confused instruction. Sure you can learn 2+2 because that is verifiable as to its result. You can add it over and over again and the answer is always the same. But philosophy is something else. Opinion or conjecture are not verifiable and generally cannot be proved and that is where much of the deceit of this world lies. If one cannot disprove a thing, then it is often easy to convince or mislead the masses. This type of philosophy dilutes the teaching of Bible doctrine and serves as a distraction away from Bible teaching. But again, people make their own choices. God provides sound doctrine and always makes it clear. So there is no excuse for anyone who rejects Gods Word.

God provides sound instruction and warns us to take hold of it and never abandon it. Your life, the possibilities of living your life in blessing, or in misery, depend on your attitude toward Bible doctrine, and you compliance with Gods commands.

We are all children at one time in our life. Some never grow up. Some never mature or become responsible, or want to be held accountable for their actions. But God views us as children, and tender ones at that. A tender child is impressionable, easily misguided by the neat and cool things in life. God looks at us as his only children, each of us getting unique personal attention and care. We are not lost in the mob of a large family, and forced to share or give up things in our life because the younger kids are more demanding and louder than we are. We, each of us, have special attention from God.

The first thing that God teaches us is to listen to His doctrine. Listen to His words. To live by, to hold fast, and keep His commandments. You are never asked to go out and knock on doors, or stand on street corners yelling at the top of your lungs ‘The kingdom of God’, etc., or otherwise making a fool of yourself. You drive more people away from doctrine in that manner, than you will recruit. Besides God does all the recruiting not you or I. God knows all the thoughts, and the attitudes, and the timing of peoples decisions, and God brings doctrine to them at the proper time in their life.

Our first priority and responsibility to God is to learn His doctrine, and consequently grow up in our spiritual life. Keep Gods commandments and live! Not the Ten Commandments, but the full content of Bible doctrine.
