Proverbs 3:27

27 Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in your power to do it. 28 Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Go, and come back, And tomorrow I will give it, ‘When you have it with you. 29 Do not devise harm against your neighbor, While he lives in security beside you. 30 Do not contend with a man without cause, If he has done you no harm. 31 Do not envy a man of violence, And do not choose any of his ways.

Proverbs 3:27

Now for some application of doctrine in our daily lives. Empathy, compassion, charity are demanded of us by God. We cannot go through life and receive, or expect to receive blessings, and then we ourselves withhold charity from others.

Who is our neighbor? Everyone on the face of this earth is a neighbor, not just the people in the homes or apartments next door. All of mankind is a neighbor and all of mankind is in the same boat as we are, or as we once were. Many are unbelievers, and you as a believer in Jesus Christ, are a member of the Royal Family and are also a Royal Ambassador from God. See the details of these titles on the Blessings chart on the Index page.

As believers, and especially as believers advancing toward maturity, we wil receive blessings above and beyond those received by others. We will have excesses and to withhold them in charity is a sin or better described as an act of irresponsibility and selfishness. God provides to us even though we can neither earn nor deserve the blessings. We too cannot prejudge the worthiness of others. That is not our job. We place into Gods hands all the responsibilities of judging and punishments. We do what is expected , we give and freely from our excesses and we do not define our excesses as always being beyond our present means. We can’t fool God and we cannot rightly justify not giving when we surround ourselves with comforts and totally disregard others in need.

To withhold to a neighbor when you are able to give, is wrong. To put off until a later date, to procrastinate, is selfishness. This is not loaning your tools to the guy next door who probably brings them back broken. You have every right to say no to such things. Get this in perspective. Charity is for helping those in need. And needs range from the need for blankets, clothing, food, shelter, money and so forth. But there are lots of good charities out there who provide these services to people. It should not be difficult to find a good organization in your local area.

Also, your charity should be on an ongoing basis, not just on a once per year holiday when you feel guilty, as the music of the season plays. Too, do not get confused by charity and plain common sense. You teach your kids to not talk to strangers. Likewise, you do not pick up hitchhikers, or stop for people broken down on the side of the road. Too many crack pots out there. Use your cellular phone to call for assistance for them, but keep on driving. You have done your part and assistance wil be able to give them a tow or whatever. Probably things you can’t do anyway, and you have protected yourself and your family from any possible harm. Be smart and be safe. This goes for walking down dark alleys at night. Need I say more.

On the flip side, if someone rubs you the wrong way, do not let it get under your skin. Don’t get agitated. Avoid revenge, or getting even. Don’t plot things against them to make yourself feel better. Don’t go on a vigilante crusade. Don’t crusade in any case. There are lots of causes in this world. Save this or that. Don’t do this or that. Boycott this company or that company. These are the pursuits of fools, of people who are driven by their righteousnesses, their arrogance. They try to superimpose their ideals, their morals on others. And if others do not listen, then the process escalates into violence.

Don’t take actions against others for no reason. Perhaps you have had a bad day, so you look for someone to be a scapegoat, someone on which to take out your frustrations. Innocent victims are easy prey. Teenagers join gangs to take actions against innocents. They rationalize their actions as their right. It gives them a sense of power, of unity, and these sensations are purely emotional and false. They destroy the freedoms and rights of others. The glorify people of crime, people who have reputations of doing wrong. The movies do a lot of this – glorifying the bad guys.

We are warned to not follow the ways of the wicked, because their ways are not to glory, but to doom. The ways of the wicked destroy life, and never advance it. There is no prosperity in pursuing wrong, only the myth of prosperity. So do not choose this way. But instead choose the ways of God. Right back to the first couple of verses of this chapter. With God there is profit. Apart from God there is doom and misery.
