3 Though
an host [machaneh] should encamp [chanah]
against me, my heart [leb] shall not fear [yare']: though war [milchamah]
should rise [quwm] against me, in this will I
be confident [batach]. KJV-Interlinear
3 Though a
host encamp against me, My heart will not fear; Though war arise against me, In
spite of this I shall be confident. NASB
David ruled for forty years, and during most of those years, he was faced with battle after battle until he achieved a period of peace, that continued through the reign of Solomon.
During those warring years, David could honestly say that he was surrounded by enemies. Both, foreign armies who were set on destroying the nation, and domestic enemies set on destroying Davids rule, were ever present and more than willing to defeat David and Israel.
But as the scriptures apply to us all, and most of us are not in military combat situations, then these words take on a dual meaning for life's difficulties in general.
This is the devils world, and as such the entire world is against you, in one way or another.
Whether it is the difficulty you face from the moment by moment activity of your own thoughts, to the problems that you will face from other people in this world, to the difficulties that you will face from the bureaucratic nature of government or organizations, to the threats that come from mother nature, all of these and more, offer an unlimited volume of possible problems that can upset your life.
If you are poor, then you do not have enough pay for things. If you are wealthy, then you are hard pressed to preserve what you have. And if you are somewhere in between, then life can come at you from all directions as you do not have enough to keep you safe, and you have too much to prevent you from qualifying from the many benefits that seem to be out there in the world.
So no one has a totally secure life in this world.
But there are only two defenses for you, in all of these difficulties, and they are, whatever resources that you have or have access to from the world, and the second defense is God.
David had his weapons, his soldiers, and his wits, with which to deal with the situations of war and politics.
You have your employment or your business, your benefits, your insurance, your education, and perhaps even your talent or health, and so forth.
And even though most of these things are not available to us all, we all have access to God, if we make the right choices in life. And that means daily or moment by moment, right thoughts and intents and actions in your life.
None of us can rely on the world, as the world cares nothing for us and will not look after us.
But all of us can look to God. We only need to have a genuine interest and desire for advancing in our spiritual life and pursue it correctly, and then God is always there.
