9 He bowed
[natah] the heavens [shamayim]
also, and came down: [yarad] and darkness [`araphel] was under his feet. [regel]
KJV-Interlinear
9 He bowed
the heavens also, and came down With thick darkness under His feet. NASB
The symbolism continues of the overwhelming power and presence of God.
The heavens seem to come down to the earth in the form of heavy storm filled clouds riding low in the sky, churning from powerful winds, appearing violent across the entire horizon and beyond.
The darkness of the storm covers the internal strength of its power. The size and mass of the storm is impossible to determine. Its source, its duration, its destination as it rolls across the land, also are impossible to determne.
Even with todays modern science and satellite photographs of storms that show their huge mass and strength, but cannot completely forecast their ultimate result.
Today, we might use examples of a galaxy or a black hole, which are things that are beyond the human abilty to measure. Their magnitude and power being immense.
But this imagery is of a storm that is right down in the face of the observer, up close and personal. And this leaves the observer nowhere to run or hide or escape, and certainly no means of determining its total magnitude.
This leaves the arrogance of the observer, amounting to nothing, his mockery, a shambles, his attitude in check, and makes it very clear that God is the almighty, the all-powerful and in all of creation, there is no equal.
