Preserve [shamar] me, O God: ['el] for in thee do I put my trust. [chacah]KJV-Interlinear
1 A Mikhtam
of David.
Preserve
me, O God, for I take refuge in Thee. NASB
Michtam means a writing, a poem, a song. Sometimes it is referred as golden, or precious. The root of the word means to stamp or engrave. And it comes to mean a writing that is so important or valuable, that it is worthy of being engraved in some form so as to preserve it forever.
Therefore, a psalm so precious it should be stamped in gold.
O God, 'el,' means strength or power, mighty or almighty.
Preserve, 'shamar,' to hedge about as with thorns, to guard, to protect, to attend, to surround with a protective and impenetrable barrier or fortress, to maintain.
Trust, 'chacah,' means to flee for protection, to confide, to reside, to make refuge with confidence and boldness.
Therefore, in God who is so powerful in that there is no other source of power that is greater, we are to run with speed and purpose, as though there is imminent danger, knowing with confidence and certainty, that we will be protected by an impenetrable defense.
And so in your life, your running is not geographical as from point A to point 'B,' for there is no place on this earth that one can run in order to escape evil.
But your running is in truth, or doctrine. You develop a want, a desire, a yearning for knowledge, the knowledge of God, which is doctrine, such that you learn it through study.
And you learn it because you know deep down inside, that it is what it right. That God is the one and only place to whom you can turn for anything worthy in life, regardless of the difficulties that we all face in life. And we turn to God through the content of the scriptures, which we learn, which we feed on, for it is the daily meal that sustains us, just as all foods are designed to sustain us. This food is for the soul, which is the true person.
Doctrine provides us with truth, with discernment, with orientation to life, with the sustaining power, 'el,' that has no equal.
Doctrine provides us with the growth and structure of soul, that contributes to our productiveness in life, which production is valuable and intrinsic as is gold.
Doctrine which provides us with maturity and the ever certainty of eternal reward that will be above and beyond our thoughts or imagination.
This then is the truth that is worthy of being written in permanent form, so that all may read, and understand, and come to the knowledge that doctrine is the single most valuable possession that we can ever own.
And, therefore, should be pursued as treasure would be pursued, as legitimate pleasure would be pursued, as legitimate intimacy and love are pursued.
Only that, Bible doctrine is far, far, far more valuable.
The question is, will you recognize this and will you chase (through daily study) after doctrine as though your very life depends on it? Because it does.
