4 Who have
said, ['amar] With our tongue [lashown]
will we prevail; [gabar] our lips [saphah] are our own: who is lord ['adown] over us?KJV-Interlinear
4 Who have
said, "With our tongue we will prevail; Our lips are our own; who is lord
over us?" NASB
Who have said, 'amar,' means who habitually say over and over, again and again as a matter of a pattern they have chosen for their daily life.
This is the state of those who have had all of the advantages of the spiritual life, but have chosen to ignore truth, and have instead chosen the pattern of the world.
This choice is not just a mere flirting with the world, not just an accidental choice that will go away, but is a conscious choice and an established pattern of life, as demonstrated by the day after day, year after year pattern of behavior.
Everyone can slip from their spiritual life, and then get back as they should. That is not an established pattern.
But here the psalmist states that this choice is a conscious choice and is ongoing without correction for an extended period of time, namely occupying most of ones life.
With our tongue, means simply by means of ourselves, by means of our own effort, by means of our own choices.
We will prevail, demonstrates the established attitude of behavior. It means that we will do better, we will do mightily. This implies that the individual knows better for himself, for his life, better that even God can accomplish.
Our lips, indicate the attitude that the individual is independent from all outside influences, is independent from the world, independent from their sin nature, and certainly this indicates an attitude that the individual is well able to operate independent from God.
Who is lord over us, is a question asked by the source of arrogance and indicates the quintessence of detachment from reality.
The person who rejects God, Christ, doctrine, the spiritual life that God has ordained and so forth, is truly in defiance of reality. They reject the idea that anyone other than themselves has anything to do with their life, that anyone other than themselves has any control over their life, that anything other than themselves has any determination over their destiny (their desired destiny).
And for a person who is a mere few decades old, perhaps sixteen years old, perhaps sixty years old, or any age for that matter, and then presumes that they know all there is to know in this universe, is pure delusion.
They controlled nothing prior to their physical birth. They control nothing during their life, even though they think they do. They control nothing after they leave this world (something that they choose to ignore, presuming that today and the activities of today will perpetuate themselves for the foreseeable future). Teens and the younger generation do this a lot. Their social life or personal desires are high on their priority list.
The person who ignores doctrine, looks to themselves and to no other. They see no need especially in a deity they can't even detect or measure or quantify or verify themselves.
