4 What is

If you were to ask the question of celebrities, 'Why are you so important?' Then you will no doubt get a response from arrogance, or of self accompishment, or of something that sets them apart from everyone else. That is if they were to tell the truth.
But even a humble response would be filled with hypocrisy or phony rhetoric.
Here the psalmist asks the true question of God, regarding man who is little more than dust, little more than a life entity placed in dust, a sinner, an unaccomplished individual apart from Gods grace, a mere vapor that disappears with a short life span, a person whom time forgets rapidly.
How many of the trillions of folks that have been born into life, since Adam, do you remember?
Virtually none, when compared with the huge population of humanity that has been born.
You don't even know all of the names of the people who live within a mile of you, let alone from around the world or back into history.
History and time easily forgets most everyone, and you will not be an exception.
From body odor, to human waste, to the corruption of death, humanity is filled with all of the signs of sin and disgrace, which no one can deny or escape. We must wash or pour external ointments over ourselves in order to cover (but not eliminate) temporarily all of our flaws.
Only God can make us better than we are. Man in all of his glory and technology, will never be able to get rid of the filth of our ancestry or legacy.
And yet God in all of His power and abilities that exceed our comprehension, has given us more than the time of day, He has given us far beyond anything that any of us could collectively acquire in all of history, when none of us even deserve the essence of life.
So, when you look at humanity, the negatives far outweigh the positives. The limitations far outweigh the abilities. The failures far outweigh the successes, unless of course you ignore what the Bible has to say.
Those who reject the Bible, naturally see nothing wrong with themselves much less the human race, and they will be the failures and the leaders to failure, in life and history.
And yet, God, despite mans limitations, has set out a plan that none of us can comprehend let alone deserve.
This psalm sets up and describes the vast infinite distance between man and God, proving that man has no leg to stand on, no demand that is deserving, no boast that is worthy or even valid.
