17 Like [k@mow] as a woman with child
[hareh], that draweth near [qarab] the time of her delivery [yalad], is in pain [chuwl], and
crieth out [za`aq] in her pangs [chebel]; so have we been in thy sight [paniym], O LORD [Y@hovah]. KJV-Interlinear
17 Like a pregnant woman who writhes and cries out in her pangs when
she is near to giving birth, so were we because of you, O LORD; ESV
You cannot blame the present generation for the failures of yesterday. You cannot blame todays generation for the failures of tomorrow. Each person, just as each generation, is responsible for their own failures.
And the generations of humanity have failed repeatedly throughout history, not because of others, but because of their own failures in the spiritual realm.
Generations fail, God delivers, and then the generations resume right back where they left off, to repeat the failure process over and over again.
The pains of child birth, are used here to symbolize the pains, both internally and externally, of the individual when their spiritual life falls apart.
And spiritual lives fall apart, resulting from the failures of individuals in their spiritual lives, resulting in pains that are beyond description.
And this is a very good description of what one can expect out of life, when God is ignored, when Christ is ignored, when doctrine is ignored.
In other words, if indifference toward doctrine, exists in the life, then misery in great magnitude, is the best you can expect.
Misery does not come upon you instantly nor continue over the long haul, but when it comes, it will not be pleasant.
