12 And the
harp, [kinnowr] and the viol, [nebel] the
tabret, [toph] and pipe, [chaliyl] and wine, [yayin] are in
their feasts: [mishteh] but they regard [nabat] not the work [po`al] of the
LORD, [Yahovah] neither consider [ra'ah] the operation [ma`aseh] of
his hands. [yad] KJV-Interlinear
12 And
their banquets are accompanied by lyre and harp, by tambourine and flute, and
by wine; But they do not pay attention to the deeds of the Lord, Nor do they
consider the work of His hands. NASB
The harp is a stringed musical instrument. The viol, sometimes called the lyre, is another stringed musical instrument. The tabret was a drum style musical instrument similar to the tambourine. The pipe is a flute like instrument.
And so the party continues from morning until into the night.
This describes the atmosphere and the attitude of those who have succumbed to evil in their lives.
From previous verses, the world around them is destitute of economic activity. Productivity has plummeted to virtually nothing, and yet the attitude is one of partying, and disregard to the problems all around. Not the least of which is doctrine, which had been disregarded and forgotten long before.
When doctrine is ignored, not learned, disregarded and replaced with other influences, influences that become more important to the life of the individual, than orientation to life, then priorities in life, obligations and responsibilities of life, all get set aside and replaced with irresponsibility and poor priorities.
Even when life goes downhill, even when the most notable events exist, such as a non-productive economy, such as empty homes, they are not recognized as the results of ones lifestyle, if they are even recognized at all.
Responsibility is replaced with entertainment and self-pleasures, and the pleasures are pursued day after day, becoming the pattern of ones life. The dire economic situation seems acceptable.
Today our economy has been worse off for the last three years and a bit more. Four years ago unemployment was below five percent, today the national debt has far more than doubled, in Europe the situation is far worse, and yet there is no alarm, no recognition as to the cause, but a push for more of the same, which is the worst possible plan. And yet people are doing exactly what this chapter describes. They reject truth and are pushing for more and more of the current patterns of life.
God, Christ, doctrine, are all set aside, ignored, replaced with 'better' philosophies or beliefs, and that turning aside from doctrine is not recognized as wrong, but is rejected for something that is perceived as better, but is not.
What can anyone reasonably expect if attitudes toward God do not change?
