3 And now,
O inhabitants [yashab] of Jerusalem, [Yaruwshalaim]
and men ['iysh] of Judah, [Yahuwdah] judge, [shaphat] I pray
you, betwixt me and my vineyard. [kerem] KJV-Interlinear
3 "And
now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, Judge between Me and My
vineyard. NASB
And now, God asks of those, even you, who would listen.
What would you do? If you had constructed a vineyard, planted a vineyard, cultivated and pruned a vineyard, cared for it and did all that could possibly be done to and for it, and then it simply does not respond, does not produce, becomes totally worthless and a waste of time.
What would you do if you poured out your life into a project and it ends up totally worthless?
Well, most folks will throw it away, destroy it, set it aside, move on to something else.
And so the question is asked in order to explain the justice and reasonableness and fairness of Gods decision.
In but a couple of verses, God states emphatically that He is going to destroy Jerusalem and Judah. And more correctly He is going to judge and punish those who are the worthless within and without His family.
For it is these, members of humanity, that God has planted on this earth. Some will reject God outright. Some will accept God but will remain indifferent toward His Word. Some will accept God and then pursue His word partly. And some will pursue His word to the maximum.
For those who remain loyal to wickedness (all patterns of life that are not consistent with Gods plan), then there will be a judgment, due to their failure to thrive and produce.
Only truth can produce good. Good is the only legitimate production of life.
All evil cannot produce good, and therefore is worthless, destructive, and doomed to failure.
What would you do? God is fair. And anyone who has an objective or even a subjective eye, knows that even they would cast aside something that is worthless, putrid, rotten.
