16 And [kai] not [ou] as [hos] it was by [dia] one [heis] that sinned [hamartano], so is the gift [dorema]:
for [gar][men]
the judgment [krima] was by [ek] one [heis] to [eis] condemnation [katakrima],
but [de] the free gift [charisma] is of [ek] many [polus] offences [paraptoma] unto [eis] justification [dikaioma].
KJV-Interlinear
16 And the
free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment
following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many
trespasses brought justification. ESV
The free gift, which is salvation, is not singular as was the sin of one man, namely Adam. For Adam made a conscious decision and committed one sin. And as a result of that sin the entire human race was condemned.
However, condemnation does not come without some form of act from each individual. Each person in the human race in effect, confirms the sin of Adam, when each person, of their own volition, commits their own sins.
The gift of salvation, which is the result of Christ’s work on the cross, is far greater, because just as the act of one man, Adam, condemned humanity, so too the act of one man, Christ, brought about salvation and justification for all.
Adam committed one sin, however humanity throughout the generations has committed many, many sins.
Jesus Christ performed one act on the cross, and his one act paid the price, not only of Adams original sin, but paid the price for all sins committed by all of humanity, throughout all of history.
Adam made a conscious decision and committed his sin.
Jesus Christ made a conscious decision and paid the price for all sin.
Each individual and human race has made conscious decisions, which resulted in their confirmation of the original sin they were born with, from Adam.
Adam’s sin, does not in and of itself condemn people to the Lake of fire. Infants for example, inherit Adam sin, however they are not condemned to the Lake of fire, but go to heaven, if they should die as an infant, or as an individual who has not grown up to the age of responsibility. We learn this principle from the death of David’s first child, whom David said he will see in heaven.
The point of this verse, is that even though Adam’s sin brought condemnation, however that condemnation made possible a greater gift of life for all of humanity.
