9 And [kai] this [touto] I pray [proseuchomai], that [hina] your [humon] love [agape] may abound [perisseuo] yet [eti] more [mallon] and [kai] more [mallon] in [en] knowledge [epignosis] and [kai] in all [pas] judgment [aisthesis];
10 That [eis] ye [humas] may approve [dokimazo] things that are excellent [diaphero]; that [hina] ye may be [o] sincere [heilikrines] and [kai] without offence [aproskopos] till [eis] the day [hemera] of Christ [Christos];
11 Being filled [pleroo] with the fruits [karpos] of righteousness [dikaiosune], which [ho] are by [dia] Jesus [Iesous] Christ [Christos], unto [eis] the glory [doxa] and [kai] praise [epainos] of God [theos]. KJV-Interlinear
9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, 10 so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; 11 having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. NASB
Paul's prayer is for their love, the love of you and me as well, that it will abound, expand without limits. But what is the love he is referring to? An emotional love which is a feeling generally undefined, a feeling of want or response to something or someone? No. This is a love of knowledge. Love, 'agape', meaning a feast of charity, a social or moral sense. And this love is produced by knowledge, 'epignosis', full discernment, possession of wisdom.
Love here is often referred to as impersonal love. An attitude of tolerance for others. There are a lot of people in this world and a lot of personalities. Lots of situations you will run into. And tolerance is necessary in order to get along with others. If you are inpatient, in a hurry, or maybe confused over something, then waiting on people, or getting them to speed up or slow down can be trying on your nerves and patience. Poise is the answer and a relaxed mental attitude.
This is the love commanded of us, love one another. That means tolerate each other. Don't be impatient. Don't get in a hurry. Don't get frustrated with others. If you are smart and others are not up to your speed in what you know, then you need to slow down and help them understand whatever it is you are communicating. If the line is moving slow, you need to take some deep breaths and learn patience. The full extent of your life will not complete itself in the next hour. You won't miss out on anything.
This love is a capacity which grows out of knowledge, 'epignosis', possessed information. Remember when we studied the heart and mind? The function of the soul and its inner components where the heart pumps the info, and the mind (kidneys), completes the process? Here is epignosis, information which you have learned and now understand completely. You have heard it, learned it, applied it, and now possess it. This is Bible doctrine as it is supposed to be in your soul. Useful and fruitful. A garden that does not produce is worthless. Doctrine in your soul which does not produce is worthless. Might as well just be words on the page. Ink on paper. It is no good until you have complete control over it and can use it in your life.
Knowledge you possess gives you discernment, and understanding. Life is clearer to you. You can make decisions without much anxiousness or uncertainty, or anxeity. You actually have more fun in life believe it or not!
This, in order that you can approve, test, examine, and know that, what you know, is real and accurate. You know that the word of God is alive and powerful in your life. And that basing you life on doctrine, you wil now have a sense of certainty, security, of where it is you are going, of a destiny, of an objective. Your eyes are opened and the darkness that surrounds other people, is gone for you.
Having fulfilled the fruit of righteousness, from Jesus Christ. Fruit is a reference to your production, of the application of what you know to your daily life. And of course it all comes from God, through Jesus Christ. Christ is our salvation, and that is the only gate through which we can gain any kind of access to God.
You learn doctrine through the proper function of your fellowship and daily study of Gods Word. This learning, eventually develops in your soul to the point that you actually understand what you have learned. You apply to your life that which you have learned. Like being tolerant of other people. Recognizing that others are not the same as you. That God has made people in many different shapes and sizes, in many different levels of intelligence, in many different degrees of health and abilities. We cannot criticize anyone for their circumstances, not lust after what they have and we do not. Our real life is in eternity. This is a temporary life, a testing ground, a place for us to get ourselves prepared for the real life to come. This is the only chance for you to encounter adversity and helplessness, and the only opportunity for you to really trust in God and demonstrate your strength in faith.
Filled with doctrine, and therefore Gods righteousness, we are basing our life on that and not on our own righteousness, which has its origin from the dust, and useless dust at that. All glory and praise goes to God and not ourselves. We can neither earn nor deserve credit of any kind. Our place in this world is courtesy of Gods grace. For that we need to learn humility, tolerance, appreciation, and certainly faith.
