You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.

Jude 1:11

11 Woe [ouai] unto them [autos]! for [hoti] they have gone [poreuomai] in the way [hodos] of Cain [Kain], and [kai] ran greedily after [ekcheo] the error [plane] of Balaam [Balaam] for reward [misthos], and [kai] perished [apollumi] in the gainsaying [antilogia] of Core [Kore]. KJV-Interlinear

11 Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. NASB

The story of Cain is found in Gen.. 4. The story of Balaam is found in Num. 22. The story of Korah is found in Num. 16.

Each of these three, Cain, Balaam, and Korah, were evil men. The evil men of Jude's day, and all evil people in history who try to distract or discredit Gods Word, disobediently devised their own ways of worship, were selfish and greedy and envious of others, hated others with a murderous spirit, and/or rejected all authority as in the case of Korah, lusting for power of their own and lusting for leadership or positions of influence in which they were not entitled.

Gen. 4:8
8 And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. NASB

1 John 3:12
12 not as Cain, who was of the evil one, and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother's were righteous. NASB

2 Peter 2:15-16
15 forsaking the right way they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness, 16 but he received a rebuke for his own transgression; for a dumb donkey, speaking with a voice of a man, restrained the madness of the prophet. NASB

Num. 22:30
30 And the donkey said to Balaam, 'Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden all your life to this day? Have I ever been accustomed to do so to you?' And he said, 'No.' NASB

Balaam tried to pretend to serve God, but was really in it all for the money and the fame it brought him. He in turn tried to get others to follow in his foot steps of sin (sins of any kind).

The false leaders of Jude's day, greedy for money, greedy for attention, greedy to discredit anyone who pursued their spiritual life, led others into sin, knowing but with total disregard for the danger to themselves of their actions.

Korah resented the authority and recognition that God gave to Moses and therefore led a revolt against Moses and Aaron, refusing to acknowledge that God had delegated authority to them and not him. He wanted the authority and power of high position. God places everyone in power, in the positions in which they are placed. Doesn't make them right or not for those positions. Only history will teach us which is the case. But Moses was Gods choice and the right choice. Korah and his followers were not Gods choice. Their agenda was only for their own selfish interests.

Num. 16:3
3 And they assembled together against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, 'You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is in their midst; so why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?' NASB

Num. 16:31-33
31 Then it came about as he finished speaking all these words, that the ground that was under them split open; 32 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who belonged to Korah, with their possessions. 33 So they and all that belonged to them went down alive to Sheol; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. NASB

Those who appoint themselves to positions of power or presumed authority for their own selfish or crusader agenda will always fail in the long run.

If God intends for you to advance in life, then He will advance you and there is nothing in this universe which can prevent it. God also may allow evil people to advance to power when the general population is corrupt. That means big trouble for the region.

One wonders just why such a huge disaster fell upon New Orleans. Perhaps all of the looters and roaming thugs is an indicator. Nevertheless the entire city has been sent through the wash - the hard way. And their judgment may still not be over yet. Only time will teach us the answer to that question.
