16 All
Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for
correction, for training in righteousness; NASB
The word for scripture, 'graphe,' means holy words, contents of a holy writ, scripture.
Inspiration of God, 'theopheustos,' is made up of two words together, 'theo' and 'pheustos.' The former referring to the most high and the latter referring to the function of breathing. And more specifically the exhale aspect of breathing (blowing) from God.
Therefore, all scripture, all truth, comes from the source of God, who exhales truth out so that man may inhale it in. All scripture is God breathed.
Profitable, 'ophelimos,' means just that, to gain, to increase, to gain advantage. And the only source of advantage in this devils world, the only legitimate gain, the only true profit in existence comes from Bible doctrine. Doctrine is permanent and eternal and the only possession that one can have that will go on forever and never be lost. Unlike any and all earthly things.
The only true profit is for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness.
Doctrine, 'didaskalia,' means the function process and content of instruction or information, learning, teaching, the content. This doctrine comes from another word, 'didasko,' which refers to the instructor, master, teacher. So doctrine here refers to the entire learning process of the word of God.
Reproof, 'elegchos,' means proof, evidence, conviction, convince tell a fault, rebuke, scolding, criticism. And comes to mean the function of pointing out ones flaws and errors, and the means of correcting them.
Correction, 'epanorthosis,' means to straighten up again, to rectify, to make right that which is not right.
Instruction, 'paideia,' means education, training, preparation, mature. And this refers to the entire process of learning, understanding, mastering and possessing the information such that it is useful and beneficial to you.
In righteousness, 'dikaiosune,' refers to equity, character, Gods justification and righteousness, equitable innocent, holy, just. And this is the end result of your spiritual educational process mentioned above, namely the transformation from an inequitable to an equitable person, or a person of perfection or better stated, maturity.
Therefore, all scripture is God breathed. All truth comes from God and only from God. Man has no part in inventing, designing, defining truth. Truth comes only from the scriptures and the content contained therein.
That truth is there for you to learn and to understand, and to grow up in your knowledge and wisdom of God, of life, of all that matters. And it comes only from and through the spiritual learning process of a daily study of the source of truth, which is the scriptures.
The objective of this learning process and the content of truth which you are to learn, is the transformation of yourself from an imperfect person, to a perfect person.
Without a daily study of doctrine, you will never be any better than your sin nature will allow, which is not at all. You cannot invent or drive your way to truth on your own. You must be taught, and you must learn and you must want it before any of this process will work for you.
And that is exactly where we will continue tomorrow - why you must study and what the objective in study is for you and your life, and why it is the single most important thing you will ever have in all of your life.
