You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
1 Thou [su] therefore, [oun] my [mou] son, [teknon] be strong [endunamoo] in [en] the grace [charis] that is
in [en] Christ [Christos] Jesus. [Iesous] KJV-Interlinear
1 You
therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. NASB
My son, is an expression of friendship. Paul was the older person and Timothy was the younger person. There was no physical or blood relationship between them.
To be strong, is a command and mandate, but one of a passive nature.
In grace, is a reference to Gods favor to humanity and all, through His policy, which is grace.
All access to the Father comes through the Son, Jesus Christ. It is that element alone that sets Christianity apart from all other religions, beliefs, cults, and so forth wherein in these other methods, man seeks God or some higher purpose through mans own effort or method of mans invention.
Christianity is a relationship to God, through Christ, recognizing Gods work and plan, and excluding mans contribution completely.
Be strong, means to follow Gods plan and mechanism in the spiritual life, in accordance with that which God has provided. Do not try to advance yourself by means of your own defined methods or conveniences.
Salvation comes to us through a single thought, faith. We neither earn it nor deserve it. God does all of the work, we are merely the recipients of His work.
Doctrine comes to us by means of God, who is truth. Man did not originate these scriptures, but wrote them down as dictated by God over the course of the many generations of the Old and New Testaments.
Forgiveness comes to man by means of confession, which is again man merely stating his sins, but doing nothing to correct them himself.
And therefore, fellowship and the spiritual life are available to man by means of Gods effort and policy, not from man.
Spiritual growth to maturity likewise is available to man by means of the Holy Spirit, who makes all things spiritual, both perceptible and efficacious.
So from beginning to end, our life comes from God, is maintained by God, and continues because of God, and not from anything that we think we can do.
Therefore, being strong is the application of the reliance and adherence to Gods policy and plan and method for living and advancing in ones life.

Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
