1 Timothy 6:11
11 But [de] thou, [su] O [o] man [anthropos] of God, [theos] flee [pheugo] these things; [tauta] and [de] follow after [dioko] righteousness, [dikaiosune] godliness, [eusebeia] faith, [pistis] love, [agape] patience, [hupomone] meekness. [praotes] KJV-Interlinear
11 But
flee from these things, you man of God; and pursue righteousness, godliness,
faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. NASB
Man of God, refers to
Timothy, but in the broader sense, the person of God is anyone who complies
with Gods mandates, and in effect belongs to God through his adherence to Gods will.
The person
who is obedient to God, is placed in contrast with the person who violates Gods
mandates and will, and therefore is not a man of God. That contrast is described in the phrase, flee
these things. And
what things?
The things that we have
just been studying, namely loving things as opposed to loving doctrine, being
discontented with whatever one has and endlessly desiring more and more never
being satisfied, having brought nothing into the world, but presuming that you
are the cats meow to all things in life, thinking
highly of yourself and of your opinions, promoting false doctrines, promoting
disputes for the fun of the debate, promoting distortions rather than promoting
truth, hindering the spiritual fulfillment of others rather than helping them
to fulfill their destiny, pursuing endless habits that do not advance but
rather hinder your spiritual progress, and so forth.
The false or phony
person is not the man of God that they think they are, but are agents of evil.
The man (person) of God, flees these things.
He/she flees evil and all that it stands for. Flee, pheugo,
means to run away from, avoid, shun, vanish from sight. To flee all of these false things means to avoid
them with a passion, to never flirt with them, to never promote them, to never
support them, to never give them credit or honor or recognition, or the time of
day, for that matter.
The person who belongs
to God is to pursue, dioko, follow after, follow,
press forward, ensue, run after with passion.
And you are to pursue
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.
Righteousness is
equality in character (of God), being like God in character. Living within ones spiritual or fellowship
sphere.
Godliness means God
like in terms of ones pattern or function of life,
both mental and overt.
Faith refers to accepting
and making the spiritual realm, which cannot be seen or detected, as real as
possible in your life.As opposed to making the carnal world your center or focus of life.
Love, means practicing
the principles of truth. Agape, refers
to truth in principle, ordinance, and standards of life.
Patience means waiting,
endurance, perseverance, consistency.
Meekness is a reference
to humility and objectivity, as opposed to arrogance and subjectivity.
Righteousness requires
study and learning.You cannot practice
that which you do not know. And what you
study is the love or details of the scriptures, in order to learn its
principles and mandates, responsibilities and expectations.
You approach life in
humility rather than arrogance, with acceptance of ones
own thoughts and actions, as oppose to approaching life with impunity and scape-goats.
And you do this all of
your life. You persevere, you do not
stop, you do not quit, you never give up, you fall and you get right back up.
The world will try to
disorient you, distract you, discourage you, redirect your attention to
meaningless and useless activities, but your strongest ally is faith, and faith
translates into confidence.Confidence in God and that which He has promised for your eternal
future.
The man of God has a
future, a very bright future, with certainty.
Those who do not fit into this category, those who go it alone (so they
think), have virtually nothing but hopes and wishes that will never come true.
The man (person) of
God, the spiritually mature believer, has confidence and a guarantee from
Christ.
