1 Timothy 6:8
8 And [de] having [echo] food [diatrophe] and [kai] raiment [skepasma] let us be [arkeo] therewith [toutois] content. [arkeo] KJV-Interlinear
8 And if we have food and
covering, with these we shall be content. NASB
One of the most
difficult things in life is the ability to distinguish between those things
that we need and those things that we want in life.
This verse does not
intend to say that you should want only the bare minimums in life in order to
survive.God is not a fool,
and God knows that the inherent desire for more and better is in everyone.
After all, He created
salvation so that we could have heaven, which is far more than anything that exists
on this earth.
Wanting more is natural
and normal.
Likewise, God did not
make everyone so that they could or should, get by on the bare essentials of
life.He did promote David, Job,
Solomon, Moses, and many others, to great positions, wealth, influence, and so
forth.
God invented the
principles of divine establishment which includes the principles of free
enterprise, the principles of reservoirs, the principles of leadership, and so
forth, so that everyone would have a place and resources in life, regardless of
who they are.
What this verse is
directed at, are the inordinate desires and ambitions that leave out the
spiritual side of ones life.
Your spiritual life is
the single most important aspect and component of your life. It is the only thing that you can take with
you into eternity. Your spiritual life includes the content of your soul
(spiritual content), the production of your life (spiritual production), and
the inner resources (spiritual resources) that are eternal.
These things make up
who you are, and qualify you for eternal blessings.
The expression of need
for food and clothing, refers to the basic and
necessary things that you need in order to get by in life, the talents and
abilities that you have to apply to your life.
God placed us all in
this world. We came in as babies, with
nothing and nothing to offer.
All that we have or
will have, comes from God and from no other
source.God gave us all a means to
support our self in this world, while we grow up in our spiritual life. Unfortunately far too many people place
emphasis on their worldly life, and ignore their spiritual life. And your emphasis should be the other way
around
You should place
emphasis on your spiritual advancement, while simultaneously living your life
in this world.
To some, God will give
a little.To some God will give a
lot.Whatever your situation is, it is
good enough for you to allow you to advance in your spiritual life. And, if you are given more, then you will be
able to help others in some fashion (employment, charity, whatever), to make their
life in this world functional and/or tolerable, so that they can concentrate on
their spiritual life.
Remember one important
principle in life. You are to be a
fruitful and productive person.What
does that mean really?Well, when a tree
or vine produces fruit, it is productive.
But it does not produce fruit for itself. It produces for others. It does not eat its own production. Others benefit from its production.
And therefore, those
who concentrate their lives on productivity and success for their own benefit,
are missing the whole point of why they are here in this world in the first
place.
Our future is in
heaven, not on this earth.
However, governments and
social views focus on this world and their own agenda as though it is the only accomplishment
that will last forever. And it will not.
How many governments
and empires and nations have come and gone from history. All of them. Why do you suppose that it is any different
now?
As we have already
studied in Thessalonians and Revelation, the vast majority of every citizen of
every country on this planet will someday, move toward apostasy, as never
before in history. You recall our great
apostasy study.And then the Rapture
and Tribulation will occur.
So, whether it is your
own demise in life or the next historical events of history, sooner or later
you will leave this world behind and everything that you deemed valuable. What you need is your spiritual life, because
it is that possession, and nothing from this world, that will carry you into
eternity.
