1 Timothy 4:8
8 For [gar] bodily [somatikos] exercise [gumnasia] profiteth
[esti] [ophelimos] little [pros]: [oligos] but [de] godliness [eusebeia] is [esti] profitable [ophelimos] unto [pros] all things, [pas] having [echo] promise [epaggelia] of the life [zoe] that now is, [nun] and [kai] of that which is to come. [mello] KJV-Interlinear
8 for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for
all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life
to come. NASB
In our present day,
there is a great deal of emphasis on the physical aspects of ones life. The
airwaves are saturated with physical fitness marketing plans, diet plans, body
shaping clothing, wellness of the heart and body and bones and on and on.
And not that there is anything
wrong with keeping oneself physically fit, for it is certainly recommended for
us all, but any and all physical activities are limited as to their extent (you
can only do so much for or to yourself), and their duration (it all ends when
you die).
And what happens to
that beautifully sculptured body of yours when you die? It goes into the grave and becomes far less
than pleasant in just a matter of hours.
Eventually it disintegrates altogether.
However, Bible doctrine
is good both now in this life, but it will also last forever. Bible doctrine is permanent.
Bible doctrine is the
basis for your spiritual growth and overall health.
Health?Will it
cure your ailments? No. But a peace of mind certainly contributes to
ones inner peace and tranquility verses the stresses and worries of the world. So, spiritual growth overflows to the peace
of the physical body, whereas, the physical body exercises will not and cannot
overflow into the spiritual realm of the soul.
You cannot hum,
reflect, meditate, or think your way through spiritual tranquility or growth. You cannot pump iron or run or do anything
physical that will promote your spiritual life.
Your most valuable and precious possession in your spiritual
life.It not only will last you forever,
but it is the basis for your eternal rewards, which are potentially (for mature
believers) vast and beyond imagination.
And as for this life,
God guides the spiritually mature believer through life, regardless of the hazards
that we will all come face to face with during our lives.
