Chapter 7 - Good Shepherd

John 10:34-42

32 Jesus [Iesous] answered [apokrinomai] them [autos] , Many [polus] good [kalos] works [ergon] have I shewed [deiknuo] you [humin] from [ek] my [mou] Father [pater] ; for [dia] which [poios] of those [autos] works [ergon] do ye stone [lithazo] me [me] ?
33 The Jews [Ioudaios] answered [apokrinomai] him [autos] , saying [lego] , For [peri] a good [kalos] work [ergon] we stone [lithazo] thee [se] not [ou] ; but [alla] for [peri] blasphemy [blasphemia] ; and [kai] because [hoti] that thou [su] , being [on] a man [anthropos] , makest [poieo] thyself [seautou] God [theos] .
34 Jesus [Iesous] answered [apokrinomai] them [autos] , Is it [esti] not [ou] written [grapho] in [en] your [humon] law [nomos] , I [ego] said [epo] , Ye are [este] gods [theos] ?

39 Therefore [oun] they sought [zeteo] again [palin] to take [piazo] him [autos] : but [kai] he escaped [exerchomai] out of [ek] their [autos] hand [cheir] ,
40 And [kai] went away [aperchomai] again [palin] beyond [peran] Jordan [Iordanes] into [eis] the place [topos] where [hopou] John [Ioannes] at first [proton] baptized [baptizo] [en] ; and [kai] there [ekei] he abode [meno] .
41 And [kai] many [polus] resorted [erchomai] unto [pros] him [autos] , and [kai] said [lego] , [hoti] John [Ioannes] did [poieo] no [men] [oudeis] miracle [semeion] : but [de] all things [pas] that [hosos] John [Ioannes] spake [epo] of [peri] this man [toutou] were [en] true [alethes] .

34 Jesus answered them, 'Has it not been written in your Law, 'I said, you are gods'? 35 'If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), 36 do you say of Him, whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world,' You are blaspheming,' because I said,' I am the Son of God'? 37 'If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father. ' 39 Therefore they were seeking again to seize Him, and He eluded their grasp. 40 And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was first baptizing, and He was staying there. 41 And many came to Him and were saying, 'While John performed no sign, yet everything John said about this man was true.' 42 And many believed in Him there. Jesus answers their reply, that as they state, they were to stone Him for making himself out to be God. But even the scriptures called those who were placed in authority - 'gods,' Psa. 82:6. So how, if God the Father Himself calls even those evil and foul and even some who were God fearing prophets, 'gods,' then how can these Pharisees state that the scriptures were in error?

Matt. 5:18
18 'For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from the Law, until all is accomplished. NASB

Psa. 82:6
6 I said, 'You are gods, And all of you are sons of the Most High. NASB

Every word in the Word of God is right, true, and correct in its original text. The very style and language of scripture is without exception, and not to be corrected, Matt. 5:18.

So when God issues out commissions (as kings, judges, officers and so forth) to those who would be placed in power, then they are identified as 'gods.' They are the leaders placed into positions of authority and are obligated to God, to carry out their responsibilities in an appropriate manner.

Remember our study in Daniel, and more specifically of Nebuchadnezzar, wherein God is the sovereign and sole authority who appoints and dismisses leaders and such, at His pleasure. The Divine Plan (regarding human history) is the basis for all those appointments of course. Man might think that he is gaining power or being voted into office by the will of the people, but it is God who in fact makes the appointments - be they for good people or bad. The public usually gets what it deserves. There are times when God overrules mans wishes and He places the necessary leadership in order to protect believers, or to drive (the winds of heaven) history in a direction it is intended to go.

People come along, Hitler, terrorists, and such, who try to drive history in their own chosen direction and sometimes God allows them to succeed in order to punish mankind, or to bring man back to his senses, and there are times when God simply stops the bad guys in their place. Often, God will allow the reputation or the person of evil to remain because there still exists negative people in the world, or there still exists those who would follow the reputation (i.e. why hasn't that Usama dude been captured).

The Pharisees were defiant toward Jesus. He had performed amazing deeds. Who among mankind could do the same? No one. Then if no man could perform these acts, then it must be from God and God alone. Even Satan cannot perform these deeds.

So don't believe Jesus words, as He tells them, but believe the works and their obvious source. If God calls men, 'gods,' then how much more is the identity of the Messiah, Jesus, since He does far more than any other man in prior history!

'Note, whom the Father sends He sanctifies, whom He designs for holy purposes He prepares with holy principles and dispositions.'

Nothing in history can occur unless it first has the approval of God the Father. He who can dispense with the very laws of the universe - repeal, alter, overrule them, by His power alone, then He must be the one and only sovereign Prince.

To stand in close proximity with the theocracy was to be covered with its glory - His guiding rule, but that is not enough to save or gain approval of ones thoughts, and actions, and policies. The Pharisees were standing right before the God of the universe, yet they wanted to throw rocks at the one who created everything. Their thinking was of course ludicrous. What would they hope to gain by throwing rocks at God? But then, people throughout history are constantly throwing rocks or insults at God by the very decisions they make in life.

Jesus was freeing people from the oppressions they had been living under. Freeing a people is never a wrong thing. Jesus was teaching them the Word of God, which is truth. Teaching truth is never a wrong thing. Jesus was giving people instructions for life such that they could make themselves autonomous from the burdens of this world. Giving people the opportunity of self determination is never a bad thing.

Now they might misuse their freedoms, but that is on their individual heads. We help because it is the right thing to do. God will run history. All we can do is get ourselves on the right side of history, keep ourselves responsible, be obedient to the things that are expected of us, and stay there.

When Jesus went away and back to the Jordan River, people believed the things that John the Baptist had said, and John had performed no miracles. He only spoke of the Messiah. Many believed just because they heard the words. The Pharisees disbelieved even in the face of public miracles. Negative people, when they reject the truth will embrace the lie, no matter how ridiculous it might be. End of Lesson
