Six Trials

Matt. 26:65-66

65 Then [tote] the high priest [archiereus] rent [diarrhesso] his [autos] clothes [himation] , saying [lego] , [hoti] He hath spoken blasphemy [blasphemeo] ; what [tis] further [eti] need [chreia] have we [echo] of witnesses [martus] ? behold [ide] , now [nun] ye have heard [akouo] his [autos] blasphemy [blasphemia] .
66 What [tis] think [dokeo] ye [humin] ? They answered [apokrinomai] and [de] said [epo] , He is [esti] guilty [enochos] of death [thanatos] . KJV-Interlinear

65 Then the high priest tore his robes, saying, 'He has blasphemed! What further need do we have of witnesses? Behold, you have now heard the blasphemy; 66 what do you think? 'They answered and said,' He is deserving of death!' NASB

The court, now has become a mob of self righteous hypocrites filled with hate. The High Priest tore his clothes, an action which was strictly forbidden in the Mosaic Law,

Lev 21:10

10 'And the priest who is the highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured, and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not uncover his head, nor tear his clothes;' NASB

Their entire action was phony and filled with emotional pretenses of grief. The High Priest, Caiaphas, had earlier on, determined that only one man should die to settle this matter, and now he has a confession from Jesus. He, Caiaphas is elated inside.

Jesus had, on a previous occasion, appealed to the chief priests who were questioning Him, to consider the acts of miracles He was performing, and their source, if they did not want to consider His credentials.

John 10:37-38

37 'If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; 38 but if I do them, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father.' NASB

But all along, those who were in power did were not interested in the evidence of truth. They would not come to their conclusions by an in depth study of the evidence as it relates to the scriptures. They refused to consider the evidence at all. The truth did not serve their purpose. Nor were they interested in examining the truth for the sake of the public masses, who for centuries have looked to the priesthood for truth in teaching and in their understanding of the things of God.

In this, the priesthood had dishonored themselves, and had failed their constituents.

Now the entire assembly erupted in their horror (phony as it was). We already know that there were those who had come to the point of belief in Christ. These obviously remained silent.

Later on, after the Cross, one man, Joseph of Arimathea, would seek permission to retrieve the body of Christ for the purpose of burying it.

Luke 23:50-51

50 And behold, a man named Joseph, who was a member of the Council, a good and righteous man 51 (he had not consented to their plan and action), a man from Arimathea, a city of the Jews, who was waiting for the kingdom of God; NASB

Joseph was a member of this council. So not all were against Christ, but the vast majority were.

This is supposed to be an honorable court, yet it is held at night, there is no prosecutor, no defense, no charges, and no consideration of any evidence of any kind, and now there is an eruption of emotion. 'He is deserving of death!' They are only interested in obtaining their desired goal - the death of Jesus.
