Truth and Confusion
John 14:27
27 Peace [eirene] I leave [aphiemi] with you [humin] , my [emos] peace [eirene] I give [didomi] unto you [humin] : not [ou] as [kathos] the world [kosmos] giveth [didomi] , give [didomi] I [ego] unto you [humin] . Let [tarasso] not [me] your [humon] heart [kardia] be troubled [tarasso] , neither [mede] let it be afraid [deiliao] . KJV-Interlinear
27 'Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. NASB
Peace is the possession of God. There is no other source from which peace can come. It is often called a state of rest into which the Israelites would not enter because they were a stiff necked people, as so described in the exodus generation, resistant to Gods Word. And as we have already studied, they as a people in general, will remain stiff necked through the many generations up and until that last generation which will remain alive here on earth in the Tribulation. It will be that generation of Israelites (and no other) which will finally have a change of attitude toward Christ, and it is that generation which will be rescued by Christ at His second advent and entered into the Kingdom of God here on earth, the Millennium.
The peace of God is achieved by spiritual growth and becomes evident in ones life when the individual arrives at a state of spiritual maturity. It is a state of inner peace, where inner conflict in ones soul has been resolved.
Peace is described in Eph. 2:14 as the resolution of that conflict between the carnal man and the spiritual side of a persons essence. Peace is described in Phil. 4:7 as an impenetrable garrison constructed around ones soul. That fortification built by Bible doctrine through which nothing on earth can penetrate. In Rom. 5:1, peace is described as the victory achieved in salvation when a person believes in Christ and thus becomes exempt from the second death, and receives a secure and reserved place in heaven with God forever.
Peace, the written scriptures by which peace may be achieved is to be left with the apostles and disciples and all believers who remain on earth until the return of Christ. The helper, the Holy Spirit will be sent to teach those same scriptures and to ingrain His Word within the souls of any and all who are willing to learn, and to further aid in the recall of that which is learned. Christ is the Word of God, the written Word, which is our source of spiritual strength and growth.
The soul which learns His Word, the soul which applies His Word to ones daily life, the soul which seizes the opportunity which God gives to us all, is the soul which (with a certainty) will achieve a state of inner peace, will achieve a state of inner happiness, which is free of the troubling nature of this world.
Just as the disciples had the opportunity to learn and grow up with Christ while He was here on earth in the flesh, so now they would still have His presence in their lives but through the written word, which they themselves would write to some degree.
The emphasis here is on the state of soul, and the means by which our soul can achieve peace. That means of course is by learning Bible doctrine on a daily basis, from a position of power which is by means of the Holy Spirit, who is the source of all spiritual functions in our life, which Jesus has just explained to the apostles in these last few verses.
Now Jesus is about to leave to complete the third phase of His Royal titles, His battlefield title of Royalty, which He will achieve on the Cross - the King of kings, Lord of lords, the bright morning star.
Just as Jesus has had two prior titles, namely His divine title as God which is Son of God, and His family related to this title, the Father and the Spirit. Then there is His second royal title which is in the nation of selected peoples which the Old Testament describes as the Israelites, that title being Son of David, and that royal family being the Davidic dynasty.
And now the third title, His battlefield title, King of kings, Lord of lords, His family in the time of His first advent had not yet been established, so the dispensation of Israel was interrupted to establish His Battlefield family, the Royal Family which is a reference to all of us in the Church Age.
Knowledge of all of this, and more, lends toward our attaining peace within our souls, that state of spiritual maturity which is our goal in this life.
