Triumphant Entry
John 12:27-28
27 Now [nun] is [tarasso] my [mou] soul [psuche] troubled [tarasso] ; and [kai] what [tis] shall I say [epo] ? Father [pater] , save [sozo] me [me] from [ek] this [taute] hour [hora] : but [alla] for this [touto] cause [dia] came I [erchomai] unto [eis] this [taute] hour [hora] .
28 Father [pater] , glorify [doxazo] thy [sou] name [onoma] . Then [oun] came there [erchomai] a voice [phone] from [ek] heaven [ouranos] , saying, I have [doxazo] both [kai] glorified [doxazo] it, and [kai] will glorify [doxazo] it again [palin] . KJV-Interlinear
27 'Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, 'Father, save Me from this hour'? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 'Father, glorify Thy name.' NASB
The word for 'troubled' is a reference to disappointment. Jesus has been in his ministry for over three years now. He has performed many miracles in the presence of the apostles. He has changed water into wine, walked on water, healed, repaired, or corrected every known medical problem or disability known to mankind. He has raised the dead back to life. What more could one do to prove their identity? The scriptures speak of His coming as the Messiah. The sacrificial feasts speak of His impending sacrifice - His death and resurrection and subsequent glorification.
Yet there are still uncertainties, and a lack of understanding among the apostles, the ones who have been with Him the most during these last three and one-half years.
Standing behind them are Greeks who seek an audience with Christ, and they still hesitate and discuss among themselves whether they should bring them to Him (they are gentiles after all) or not.
So here we have Christ disappointed at the results of all His teaching and miracles. Why don't they get it? Why do they remain clueless?
So Christ asks a rhetorical question. One that does not require an answer, though heard by all present. 'What do we all do now? Just pack up all our things and go home as though this is all just an exercise in good deeds and nothing more?'
'What do I say to the Father? Save me from all of this? We didn't mean it? April fools?'
But no, that is not the question nor the answer. Jesus Christ came into this world for this very purpose and to this very hour. All of history was laid out so that He could become a substitute for mankind, on the Cross, in order to provide a way of salvation for mankind.
He did not come into the world to glorify Himself, but the Father. Why is that? Because there are many religions out there which attempt to substitute a different plan for mans salvation. There is the famous four if you will - Hinduism which was the first great lie in history, then Buddhism which came on the scene and became the second great lie. Then there was Judaism which tried to distort the scriptures by adding mans traditions and mans defines rituals in place of the Son of God (Christ was rejected). Then there came the last of the four great lies - Islam, which tried to substitute another definition of God, another name, as well as rejecting the plan of the Father, and substituting another prophet and path to God.
Who is glorified? God the Father, who laid out a plan for history, and made His only (emphasize only) Son and representative as the key to His plan. This rejects all of mankind's efforts to raise himself to God by means of mans own ingenuity and effort.
Only perfection can secure perfection. Man is not perfect (far from it). Therefore, man cannot secure anything for himself. Man cannot extend his own life span indefinitely. Man cannot prevent death. Man cannot prevent the common cold. What is it man can do in the spiritual realm? Nothing.
Yet people will continue to ignore the Bible, its principles and guidelines for life. People keep to their own self defined attitudes and beliefs in life. People keep to their own compromises in their life style. People continue to reject Gods defined principles of authority, and freedom for the human race, beginning with their own volition, marriage, family values, freedom, free enterprise and self determination and so forth.
What does Christ do? What does it take to get people to understand their responsibilities to God, to self, and to others? But folks just lumber along in the fog selectively acknowledging the things they want to acknowledge, and conveniently ignoring the things that they just do not want to comply with.
We are lucky that God is applying a policy of grace to us, or He would have dumped us long ago. History rolls right along regardless of our successes in the spiritual life or our failures, of which there are many.
We can all express our (mankind's) deep knowledge of Gods wisdom in one word - 'Duh!'
