Zephaniah Introduction
Lesson # Zephaniah Introduction
Study Material - Zephaniah Introduction
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Introduction Zephaniah means The Lord Hides or The Lord Protects (from judgment). Zephaniah was the great-great grandson of King Hezekiah. He lived in the time prior to the fall of Judah and prior to the invasion of King Nebuchadnezzar. He makes predictions of the judgments of the gentile nations surrounding Judah. He makes note of the moral state of Israel and therefore predicts the captivity which is sure to come.
This prophet is placed last in the series of all the minor prophets before the captivity, and not long before Jeremiah, who lived at the time of the captivity. He foretels the general destruction of Judah and Jerusalem by the Chaldeans, and sets their sins in order before them, which had provoked God to allow their ruin to fall upon them.
He calls them to repentance, threatens the neighboring nations with similar destructions, and gives encouraging promises of their return out of captivity in due time.
The overall thrust of Zephaniah is the spiritual state of the people. They have left God and His word, and have subscribed to all sorts of beliefs which have led them in a path of delusion.
Delusion leaves nothing to hope for. It always ends up with errors in the life or a life without substance, and that leads to frustration. When truth is rejected and the lies of life are embraced, and then they do not pan out as expected, then frustration and the reactions of frustration set in. Habakkuk is the book of frustration and we will study it in due course. But for now we continue our study in Revelation 15 as we get closer to the Day of the Lord, by stopping off here is Zephaniah and studying a deluded people - those who have ignored God in their lives and the repercussions of their decisions.
