You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Zeph. 2:12 12 Ye Ethiopians [Kuwshiy] also, ye [hem] shall be slain [chalal] by my sword [chereb] . KJV-Interlinear 12 'You also, O Ethiopians, will be slain by My sword.' NASB
Ethiopia is a reference to the southern regions relative to Judah. This is also the region ruled by the King of the South in Daniel, and the Southern Kingdom of Ezekiel.
From our previous study in Daniel, you recall the description of that southern power. They are boastful, and arrogant. Speaking of great things. Thinking that they were more powerful than they really were. Like a young bull with lots of energy, and vinegar of attitude, they puff their chest to intimidate and frighten.
But the reality is that the southern power is nothing more than an alliance of boastful cowards. The descriptions of their abilities from our other studies, is in the feminine, as you probably recall, and that is not a slam against the ladies, but a description of the mental strength of the southern power, verses any other power in the world. The idea here is that they are mouthy, but weak. It is not a very nice compliment if you understand what the Bible is teaching.
Here Zephaniah gives virtually no time to the southern regions. Why? Because as we have studied in other passages, though they are tough talking, they are as weak as a helpless single female caught in the back alleys by a group of much larger and stronger males, who do not have her good health and safety in mind. Naked, helpless, and spread eagle on her back is the description we studied in Daniel.
The King of the South at the end of the Tribulation, will push northward against Israel in a simultaneous attack combined with the King of the North. Again, the words for push describe a female style attack.
The King of the North will not only attack southward against Israel, but they will double cross the King of the South and ram their way right through Israel and into Africa, swinging both east and west through all of what we know as the Arab nations in that entire region. Overwhelming and obliterating the nations from Morocco to Afghanistan, and deep into Africa.
During Zephaniah's day, there weren't any conflicts between Judah and the nations of Africa. Cushite kings typically dominated Egypt until their defeat by the Assyrian king Esarhaddon in 670 BC. Cush was a descendant of Ham, son of Noah, and these descendants settled in the African regions. You recall from history that when Pharaoh was destroyed at the exodus of Israel, that Egypt never really recovered the greatness of power that they once had.
Later King Asa of Judah defeated a large Cushite expedition under Zerah that threatened Judah, 2 Chron. 14:9-13. In 586 BC, Nebuchadnezzar will roll through the region when the Babylonian Empire spreads expands it territory.
The peoples of the south, will come to their end by means of violence (of the sword). Their slaying, 'chalal,' will be brutal, swift and without opposition as when one is caught by surprise in a dark alley, and outnumbered by criminals who charge in swiftly, seize you rendering you totally helpless, have their way with you, and then discard you (usually dead or severely injured) as though you were a piece of garbage. Then they rush away leaving you laying on the ground abandoned.
In this case, in the Tribulation, there will not be anyone to come along to help, either during the attack nor even following it. The victim is simply abandoned, and left helpless, to die if they did not die during the violent attack.
Thus is the swiftness of the demise of the arrogant peoples of the south. Today they comprise the Islamic states of the Middle East and Northern Africa. Their rejection of Jesus Christ is so thorough, and they are so distant from God and Gods Word, that they are destroyed not by God, but by the powers of the world, and they are destroyed thoroughly and with little effort.
When a people drift away from God and truth, then though they may think highly of themselves, they are in fact totally impotent, and will fall easily at the sign of the first storm which rises up against them. And Zephaniah gives them no more time in the description of their demise, than they gave to God throughout their entire existence - which is virtually none.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
