Lesson # Ruth. 2:1-3
Study Material - Ruth. 2:1-3
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Ruth 2:1-3
1 Now Naomi had a kinsman of her husband, a man of great wealth, of the family of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, 'Please let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after one in whose sight I may find favor.' And she said to her, 'Go, my daughter.' 3 So she departed and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers; and she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.
Chapter two introduces the new player in this story, Boaz. Naomi knows of him, but at this time she is not thinking of Boaz. Naomi does not mention his name, nor even makes reference to him. The text introduces us to Boaz to teach us that providence in under the control of God, not man. Jesus Christ controls history. He can bring people together, or keep them apart. Whatever Gods will is, man can do nothing to alter this providence. Man doesn't even know what lay ahead for himself on the current day, let alone in the days and years ahead in the future.
'Family', is a broad reference to the relatives of Elimelech. The specific relation is not stated, but they were related to each other in some fashion such that Boaz would have been in line as a redeemer to Naomi. Boaz will make reference to this later in his private conversation with Ruth. Boaz also knows of another unnamed person who is closer to Elimelech and has the first right of redemption. Boaz is not ignorant of Naomi's return, nor of the details of her situation. Neither does he approach her in the matter of the kinsman redemption concept. More on that later.
Boaz is a man of wealth. Elimelech is a man who has fallen from wealth and is poor. Both are representative of Gods plan, wherein a rich man (Jesus Christ) comes along to rescue, to purchase from the state of being destitute, to deliver from the bonds of slavery, those (believers, Naomi, Ruth) who have returned in faith (from Moab to Bethlehem, from sin to the city of the bread of life).
Ruth was not rude to her mother-in-law. She was respectful. She saw their predicament and that sitting around the home would not make their lives any better. They were poor. They could both have sat and waited for charity, as well as complained incessantly about their bad state of life. They did not.
Note that Ruth was thoughtful and thinking of what her options were. It was the harvest. She could not afford to purchase grain, but she could go out and follow the harvesters and glean (pick up what is not harvested) in order to get something for herself and Naomi to eat.
Ruth was a mature woman. There are three forms of maturity. The first is physical maturity as when boys and girls lives begin to change in both voice and appearance. And through their twenties and even into their thirties, all people develop physically. That is the physical maturing process. It follows the biological functions of the body. The biological life component of ones being.
The second form of maturity is mental. We mature in life as we gain in our education from home and school. We learn street savvy. We learn the morals of society. We learn responsibility and unselfishness and so forth. Some people mature mentally early in life, others sometimes never grow up mentally. Those are the whiners, the ones that never want to be held accountable for their own decisions or commitments. Mental maturity accompanies the second component of life, human life in the soul.
The third form of maturity is spiritual maturity. This comes obviously from your daily Bible study.
So, Ruth was a mature woman. She has accepted her situation with responsibility. She did not feel sorry for herself. She did not regret having made the decision to marry into this family. She did not regret having made the decision to travel to a foreign land with her mother-in-law, knowing full well that they did not have much in the way of resources for their daily living needs. Neither did she succumb to ideas of sin and try to sell herself for money. She decided to go out to glean the grain that she could find. A lowly unpaying task. It was not an employment, but a beggars task.
She did not know the fields or the owners. She would be out by herself and exposed to ridicule, harassment, maybe even some roughing up by 'tough' guys. She was a woman and a foreigner, and poor. Three strikes against her.
Providence is at Gods command. She went to the fields that looked like there was some opportunity, met with no resistance, and that field happened to be owned by a near relative of her father-in-law. She may have visited several fields, may have been refused permission the right to glean, before finding this particular field where she asked and was given permission to glean. She could have fallen upon more unscrupulous types, but God protected her and guided her steps, even without her knowledge. Ruth did not know anyone in the area. Did not know who owned the fields. She did have the right attitude and went out to glean, and God did the rest. By the way she did not presume she had the right to glean from the field but first asked permission, as we will see later.
No matter what your circumstances are in life, sitting at home doing nothing will never solve your problems. You have to be proactive. Out of work? Look for a job. Make out your resume'. Get whatever improvements you need in education. Be proactive. God will make all the rest happen in its proper order. Do not expect your first opportunity to be the only answer to your goals. You may get turned down several times, or meet with many obstacles before succeeding.
