Ruth 1:6-14
Lesson # Ruth. 1:6-14
Study Material - Ruth. 1:6-14
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Ruth 1:6-14
6 Then she arose with her daughters-in-law that she might return from the land of Moab, for she had heard in the land of Moab that the LORD had visited His people in giving them food. 7 So she departed from the place where she was, and her two daughters-in-law with her; and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah. 8 And Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, 'Go, return each of you to her mother's house. May the LORD deal kindly with you as you have dealt with the dead and with me. 9 May the LORD grant that you may find rest, each in the house of her husband.' Then she kissed them, and they lifted up their voices and wept. 10 And they said to her, 'No, but we will surely return with you to your people.' 11 But Naomi said, 'Return, my daughters. Why should you go with me? Have I yet sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? 12 'Return, my daughters! Go, for I am too old to have a husband. If I said I have hope, if I should even have a husband tonight and also bear sons, 13 would you therefore wait until they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters; for it is harder for me than for you, for the hand of the LORD has gone forth against me. ' 14 And they lifted up their voices and wept again; and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law, but Ruth clung to her.
Briefly from yesterdays study. The various names of the persons involved have special meanings. Mahlon the first son, means 'invalid'. Chilion the second son's name means 'pining away, wasting away'. Orpah the first wife means 'stiff necked'. Ruth on the other hand means 'friendship, companion'. The redeemer kinsman concept which we will be going over soon is from Num. 27. It is a sequence for distributing an inheritance down through a family line when various persons of a family do not exist, ie., to the sons and if no sons, then daughters, then if no daughters then the brothers of the deceased, and so forth. Boaz will marry Ruth after Naomi brings to Boaz's attention his duty as kinsman redeemer, but first there is another unnamed kinsman who has the first right of refusal, which he does. Naomi relinquishes her right of remarriage to Ruth, and so you should get the idea of what will be going on here.
Naomi heard the good news from Israel. The famine has ended. The trials of the land from the Israelites negligence of God, which caused their famine, and perhaps other problems which accompany punishment, have ended.
Naomi has heard the news and really wishes to return to Bethlehem. She bids her daughters-in-law to remain in Moab, their native land, so that they might find new husbands and get their lives back in order. Naomi is too old to have more children, and even if she had a husband now, she couldn't have children much less expect these two young widows to wait for new sons to grow up to become their husbands, just to remain in the family and whatever inheritance there might be.
Ruth doesn't want to leave Naomi. Orpah doesn't want Naomi to leave. That is the difference between the two young women. Ruth is not tied to the land of Moab, Orpah is. Ruth prefers the friendship of Naomi. Orpah prefers to remain in Moab.
Naomi is going to return to Israel and the customs that are there. Orpah prefers to remain in Moab and the customs which she has grown up with. Ruth will prefer God and pursue that end. Orpah rejects the God of Israel, and prefers the false beliefs of Moab.
Thus Orpah kisses Naomi good by and remains in Moab. Ruth will cling to Naomi and refuse to leave her. This is the picture of one who strongly desires God and the study of His Word, to cling to it. Geographical location is of no importance. Human expectations (no sons, no inheritance, no opportunities) are of no importance. God provides the opportunities, and nothing on earth can prevent God from creating opportunities.
Orpah looked to her comfort zone, her home that she had always known. She did not trust in fate, or in Gods provision, but looked to human viewpoint - stay home, your chances are better here.
In life we have our responsibility, common sense, and so forth. We eat lest we starve. We get an education lest we remain dumb. Both are good decisions which open up opportunities. But more than that, we study our Bibles daily so that God will provide even more opportunities and blessings with which we can use our health, education, natural abilities, talents, whatever it is that God gave us that we continue to develop through practice, training, and so forth. We do not turn our back on our Bible study because we perceive our chances of a better life are somehow compromised by staying home and studying the Bible. Couldn't be further from the truth. Bible study is in fact the only source for true opportunity.
Do whatever you do and study, train, and practice your unique gift well, whether diaper changing or rocket science, then study your Bible daily to enhance your natural (God given) human abilities to even higher planes. These 'human' abilities of course are combined with your (God given) 'spiritual' gifts which you received at the point of salvation, to provide you with even greater opportunities in life. These 'spiritual gifts' may or may not be related to your 'human' abilities. God does have a sense of humor you know.
