Psalm 39:1a

http://www.dailybiblestudy.org

1 To the chief Musician [natsach], even to Jeduthun [Yaduwthuwn], A Psalm [mizmowr] of David [David].

I said ['amar], I will take heed [shamar] to my ways [derek], that I sin [chata'] not with my tongue [lashown]: I will keep [shamar] my mouth [peh] with a bridle [machcowm], while the wicked [rasha`] is before me.   KJV-Interlinear

1 To the choirmaster: to Jeduthun. A psalm of David.

I said, “I will guard my ways, that I may not sin with my tongue; I will guard my mouth with a muzzle, so long as the wicked are in my presence.”  ESV

This is a Psalm that allows those who are suffering, to murmur and complain to God.

The circumstances are vague, the suffering is vague, however there will be a reference later in the Psalm, pointing to sin, as the focus of that suffering, but more important, to remind us all just how fleeting human life can be.

It opens with an address to the chief musician, or the choirmaster, referring to the one who is eminent in spiritual services.

The reference to Jeduthun, refers to one who is deserving of praise and celebration. And here it refers to a person who has of authority over, and is responsible for, the music, and therefore has charge of it.

Music is typically used to describe Gods policy of grace, and as the music plays on, so too, God’s grace continues on, no matter what the circumstances.
