6 I have
hated [sane'] them that regard [shamar]
lying [shav'] vanities [hebel]: but I trust [batach] in
the LORD [Yahovah]. KJV-Interlinear
6 I hate
those who regard vain idols; But I trust in the Lord. NASB
Most of the world pursues empty philosophies or empty religions or empty beliefs, but there is only one God, who is Jesus Christ, and He is compared here to all things that are not deities. There is only one truth and doctrine, and it is here compared to everything that is vanity or empty, or nothing and therefore lies.
The word for hate, ‘sane,’ means odious or abhorrent, loathsome, revolting. It is an attitude, not of emotional revenge or reaction, but of disappointing disgust.
When you look upon the entire world of people, and see how they throw away phenomenal opportunities through doctrine, then disappointing disgust is an appropriate response.
In any given race or competition in this world, there is only one winner, one champion, one who exceeds all others. But in God, in the spiritual life, everyone can be a winner and champion with the results of a winner and far more. And doctrine is so easy to learn and possess for ones self.
And yet, most of the world pursues empty philosophies or empty religions or empty pursuits of things that are not really real, but are empty hopes made up of temporary things, things that will never be and can never be, a part of the inner and real you.
Trust in vanity, which is a term for that which is empty, that which has no substance, that which has nothing to offer, and you are investing your entire life in nothing. You will get nothing in return.
Trust in God, in Christ, in doctrine, and you invest your life in that which is eternal, intrinsic, value beyond calculation.
