7 Then the
earth shook and quaked; And the foundations of the mountains were trembling And
were shaken, because He was angry. NASB
This psalm is a song which is sung in celebration of the gratitude that people display to God for providing them with a dynasty, through David, down to his son, who is God and the Messiah and man altogether in one person. The unique person of the universe, the God-man, namely Jesus Christ.
Davids personal expression is found in 2 Sam. 22, while this psalm is the expression of the people in general.
Verses seven through nineteen, portray a dramatic rescue by God who from His fortress in heaven, suddenly sees the dangers on this earth, and then rushes to the rescue as an angry dragon, and then as a raging thunderstorm, and then just as people are about to drown in the floods around them, God suddenly plucks them out of danger and sets them on high and dry ground, in safety.
The earth shakes and the mountains tremble, are descriptions of the fury of God, when He moves and advances against an enemy. This produces the terror of His power, which makes everyone and everything, fall down in panic and surrender.
Those who have experienced a major earthquake, a massive volcanic eruption, or something equally as destructive or worse, have only experienced but a small taste of that which God will bring to the battle, when He charges against an enemy.
These images are intended to portray massive and overwhelming power and authority and control, which God possesses, and man does not.
