1 Why
standest [`amad] thou afar off, [rachowq] O
LORD [Yahovah]? why hidest [`alam] thou thyself in times [`eth]
of trouble [tsarah]? KJV-Interlinear
1 Why dost
Thou stand afar off, O Lord? Why dost Thou hide Thyself in times of trouble? NASB
The wicked are to be overthrown in due course, but for a time they seem to have their way. They go here and there without regard to God. They see their lives as being one of independence, and freedom from obligation to anyone especially God.
And so the world seemingly goes its own way without any guidance from God.
Who are these wicked peoples? They are anyone who discards any type of thought from their mind, that has to do with God. Certainly they might go through the outward motions of appearing to be thoughtful of God, but their inner thoughts are one of doing whatever is necessary to advance themselves in life, whether socially or economically or both.
They attend church. They carry themselves properly. They drive the best cars, live in the finest homes. They think of themselves as being prim and proper.
Then there is another side to the wicked type. These are the scum of the earth, the lazy types that feel the world owes them something. They work 8 to 5 and complain about it. They go home to the TV and complain about it. No beer in the fridge and complain about it. Always a cocky attitude, unteachable, knows everything. They can be poor or wealthy. Ones station in life has nothing to do with ones spiritual status or lack of it.
Then.....
Life comes crashing down. Where is God? God is far off. What does that mean? God is omnipresent and therefore near us all, but that doesn't help anyone who is in need of relief when life dishes out a hard blow.
Two things run concurrently in life. The first is the history of humanity where man rejects God and tries to make his own way through life. To some extent this may work when the world is friendly to humanity and there is some semblance of prosperity. In this regard, the wicked always seem to prosper and get away with whatever it is that they do.
And then there is the second activity of life wherein man rejects God but pretends to be obedient toward God.
In both sets of circumstances, when life comes crashing down, then indifferent man and pretending man learns the hard way that God is not there to bail them out.
Man cannot control his own destiny, nor can man control the destiny of the world or of humanity. Jesus Christ controls history and ultimately everyone's destiny.
So, when you are out of sync with God either by indifference or by some other invented belief system, or when you are out of sync with God because you are out off fellowship because you have defined your own system for spirituality, then one day you will face the real facts of life and discover that God is not there to help you.
You have been disobedient in rejecting His will and therefore He rejects you in your time of need. Where then is God in your life? Where was He in your life before your problems overwhelmed you?
