Proverbs 14:23-24
23 In all labour [etseb] there is profit [mowthar]: but the talk [dabar] of the lips [saphah] tendeth only to penury [machcowr]. 24 The crown [atarah] of the wise [chakam] is their riches [osher]: but the foolishness [ivveleth] of fools [kaciyl] is folly [ivveleth]. KJV-Interlinear 23 In all labor there is profit, But mere talk leads only to poverty. 24 The crown of the wise is their riches, But the folly of fools is foolishness. NASB
The word for poverty, 'machcowr,' here is certainly means poverty but it is an absolute poverty, an extreme poverty, a barrenness, a nothingness. A person in a concentration camp and one who has been there for years has considerably more than the meaning of poverty here in this verse.
So we have another contrast in terms and circumstances. He who pursues his spiritual life in its proper course will have profit. And profit, 'mowthar,' here means tremendous, beyond imagination success and prosperity. Imagine going out your door and discovering in your back yard a gold mine, an oil well pulling from vast reserves, and a diamond and precious jewel mine. Most folks would consider that very good luck indeed. If any of you have more than that, then please let me know. But believe me that no one on this planet has that kind of wealth - no one.
The next verse together with the first verse in this passage gives us a more complete picture. Where do the riches originate from? Wisdom of course. Where does the wisdom come from? From the soul.
Wisdom is the result of years even decades perhaps, of daily Bible study. That study is in turn learned, and applied to ones daily life. This circle of wisdom as we have called it in this study, occurs within the sphere of fellowship. You study, you learn, your understand, you use, and you discover even more meaning and gain even more understanding and you do all of this over and over again and again throughout your life and this all results in wisdom. We often call this the achievement of spiritual maturity.
There is no maximum limit on maturity, you just keep growing and growing forever. Your crown is your wisdom. And that translates into great wealth and prosperity both now (within the scope of Gods plan for your life, in this life) and in eternity. Eternity is the greater portion of your entire life.
When you compare your few years in this physical life to the many trillions of years in eternity, then you can see that the greater portion of your total existence will occur in eternity.
Would you rather go into eternity with tremendous riches or with penury (the word used in the original)?
One who has everything will have nearly infinitely more than one who has absolutely nothing.
The words from the mouth come from the source of nothing. He who has doctrine in the soul has an infinite wealth source. He who has but words for the mouth has an origin of nothing.
Though the mouth originates from the thinking of the soul, if there is nothing in the mouth (nothing of value) then the soul is virtually empty of wisdom. A negative person toward Bible doctrine will never have anything of value - ever. Even if he owned the entire world, he will soon die and all he had will be gone forever. There is no transfer of assets, with respect to the world, from this life into the next.
The negative person is the fool. And the fool has only folly, which in short is a lack of good sense, a lack of understanding, a lack of foresight, a lack of wisdom. They lack Bible doctrine which is the only source of wisdom in existence. Foolishness is simply their demonstration of their lack of these things from their thinking and actions during their life. A nothing soul with nothing resources in the soul, results in a nothing person and a nothing life.
We all have the opportunity of looking in the mirror of the Word of God and seeing who we really are. We can pretend we are better than we are, but what you are doing is gambling away your entire eternal future if you refuse to be objective. And to throw away great wealth (as described above) for the sake of ones arrogance and stubbornness is in deed, dumb.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
