You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth. Proverbs 14:14 14 The backslider [cuwg] in heart [leb] shall be filled [saba] with his own ways [derek]: and a good [towb] man [iysh] shall be satisfied from himself. KJV-Interlinear 14 The backslider in heart will have his fill of his own ways, But a good man will be satisfied with his. NASB The backslider is the person who is unlearning or undoing, his spiritual life. They forget or they dismantle the spiritual resources they have had in their soul and they replace them with the worldly beliefs which they were supposed to have left behind in their former life, prior to their initial spiritual growth. The negative believer will lose any gains he had when he was originally positive. A positive believer studies and learns and applies the doctrine he has in his soul, and he grows up spiritually. The negative believer, if he ever had any spiritual growth, will lose his spiritual power so long as he remains perpetually out of fellowship or inconsistently or regularly out of fellowship. They go back to the old beliefs we studied in verse 12. They go back to those things that 'seem best' to them. We touched on some of those examples like smoking, or maintaining similar beliefs of habits which are contradicted by truth and clearly not appropriate for ones health either physically, mentally or spiritually. More examples of beliefs which people cling to and of which cause people great controversy in life are things like abortion and the controversy surrounding it, environmentalism and the controversy surrounding that topic, nuclear power, drilling for oil, use of wood products and the like. Other topics which can cause difficulty for folks cover authority or the rejection of it, marriage concepts, family concepts, employer/employee relationships, or things like deciding what people should or should not do in life, and so forth. Many people will watch sitcoms on television where comedy is used to make light of the various establishment principles in life with subtle attacks on parental authority, marriage concepts or marital relations and the like. Movies make good guys out to be the bad guys. Life styles or should I say alternative life styles like homosexuality become more acceptable in society. When people are not actively studying their Bible, then they are not receiving the instruction and guidance they need to help them guard against sliding off into false beliefs in life. The false becomes the acceptable. And when the false rules, and is never corrected, then the slide will continue into various forms of degenerate norms and standards in society. The longer a whole society slips, as a whole, then the worse the penalties for their judgment. A society of anti-authority teens and young people will eventually turn into gangs, anarchy and rebellion. Current examples of this can be found in Africa in the various countries where tremendous atrocities are even now occurring. The biggest problem that people in an advanced society have is that they don't believe that such a degenerate condition can ever occur here. But God calls those folks fools. In a single generation a society can go from prosperity to total chaos. The perfect example of that will come immediately after the Rapture occurs. As believers are removed from the world, then the restraining ministry of the Holy Spirit will also have been removed. Society will deteriorate rapidly into chaos and that condition will continue to slide downward for seven years until Armageddon and the Second Advent. Do not be fooled. Bible doctrine is the only thing which prevents the world from self destruction. That doctrine might be in you or it might be in others. That doctrine includes even the slightest respect for authority, for marriage, for family, for the integrity of ones honesty, for law and order and so forth. These things are absent in gangs, or are under attack in some television shows and the general attitude of a negative society. Notice that all things negative are manifested in attacks either outright or subtly against the laws of establishment - rejection of ones volition (rape for example), rejection of a husbands authority from a wife, rejection of traditional marriage (alternative life styles), rejection of ones privacy, the promotion of governmental regulation verses freedom to pursue ones own dream, socialism concepts as opposed to free enterprise. This list can go on and on, but you probably get the idea. All false beliefs have as their target some component of truth as taught by the Bible. A backslider, or one who is in a mode of rejection of Gods teaching, will be ruled by false concepts and beliefs in life. Likewise they will be swirling in the continued controversy which all false beliefs create. They will lack stability and true security in life. In contrast, the believer who is positive toward Gods Word and who is advancing in their spiritual life will be comfortable with what God teaches because it is the truth and because truth is the only thing which is compatible with, and perfectly aligned with, reality. Only truth provides you with something upon which you can depend. Lies of the world never belong to you. They are not real. Only truth which you have incorporated into your soul from your Bible study becomes your possession forever. And that which you own and is given to you from God, you will have forever and is a source of your security and confidence and satisfaction and contentment in life.
