You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Proverbs 14:2
2 He that walketh [halak] in his uprightness [yosher] feareth [yare] the LORD [Yahovah]: but he that is perverse [luwz] in his ways [derek] despiseth [bazah] him. KJV-Interlinear 2 He who walks in his uprightness fears the LORD, But he who is crooked in his ways despises Him. NASB
'He' is the believer who is advancing in fellowship, in his spiritual life toward spiritual maturity. He who walks, is the believer who conducts his daily affairs and lives his daily life in accordance with the principles taught in the Bible. 'In uprightness,' is the spiritual life as defined by God, not as defined by mankind.
The upright life is the life prescribed in the Bible. Too often people will read the Bible and they will interpret a life style which is compatible with their own personal views. Views which are not in accordance with the Bible. You're always going to see this in life. The only way to discern between that which God prescribes and that which people prescribe for themselves is to participate in an objective daily study of the Bible and then learn.
Fear, is the respect of and the recognition of, Gods undiminished character, power, and wisdom. You cannot know or understand what you haven't studied. People who do not pursue a daily study do not know God. They may have their own ideas, but those are most probably a mixture of the correct understanding along with many false ideas regarding God. This mixture renders ones views as generally misleading or misguided and therefore overall - false.
You end up with 'Why did God allow this or that? Why me? What have I done to deserve this or that? Why have I been saddled up with this or that person or situation?' And so forth.
The person who studies, learns. The person who learns, understands. The person who understands, applies to his daily life. The person who applies doctrine to his life pursues a pattern of life which God prescribes. The person who pursues Gods course comes to possess an understanding of life. The person who possesses understanding becomes wise and mature.
There are only two growth choices in life. You are either for God or you are not. The only way that you are for God is to obey Him. And that obedience mandates a daily study of His Word so that you can accomplish all of the above. If you are not a dedicated daily Bible student (once in a while, perhaps every other day, perhaps a holiday only student, one who will make up an excuse for 'not' studying - I'm too tired. I have to travel. I am on vacation. I have too many other things to do right now), then you are on the 'crooked' side of this verse.
Living your life outside of fellowship (we studied that concept extensively in 1, 2, 3 John recently), means that you are living under the influence of your sin nature and are therefore 'crooked.' Gods word is the straight and narrow, or the truth of life. Anything else is the crooked, the misguided, the meandering or wandering off of the path of life approach to life.
Living outside of fellowship means that you reject God, such that you will not get yourself in fellowship, you reject the idea, you are too lazy to obey Gods command in living inside the prescribed spiritual life, you do not accept His defined course for your life, and so forth.
Only if and when you pursue your spiritual life in the proper way are you in acceptance of Gods counsel. Anything else is a rejection. There is no third position you can take. You cannot define a third option for yourself.
Anyone who compromises Gods commands and principles of life is a pursuer of perversity, dishonesty, of evil. He willfully follows his own appetites and passions in life regardless of his pretense to devotion of that which is right. His interpretation of 'right' makes room for wide compromises convenient to allow his false usually self serving beliefs, to be included.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
