Proverbs 13:11-12
11 Wealth [hown] gotten by vanity [hebel] shall be diminished [ma`at]: but he that gathereth [qabats] by labour [yad] shall increase [rabah]. 12 Hope [towcheleth] deferred [mashak] maketh the heart [leb] sick [chalah]: but when the desire [ta'avah] cometh [bow], it is a tree [ets] of life [chay]. KJV-Interlinear 11 Wealth obtained by fraud dwindles, But the one who gathers by labor increases it. 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life. NASB
Thee are two types of wealth in this universe. There is wealth from the world, the wealth that most of us are aware of. It is derived from inheritance, from labor, from business intellect, from talent, from luck, from many methods of accumulation. Then there is spiritual wealth which is from God.
In order to gain wealth from this world you have to be born into it, fall into it by some means of talent or hustle, or take it by some unscrupulous method, like theft, deception and so forth. No matter how you get wealth from this world, it will never last forever. The world is fading away, and so too is everything in it. And, by the way, not everyone is destined to become wealthy. Look all around you. Is your name on some 'wealthiest' list? Probably not.
Of the nearly 6 ½ billion people on this planet now, less than 1% will be legitimately classified as wealthy. And that number is only around 65 million people. There are fewer than 1000 billionaires on the planet.
Many more are in the middle class category - a few hundred million people (that is probably where you are) and the vast majority of the planet (billions of people) are in the lower class category. So as far as this world is concerned, wealth is not for everyone, and it never will be.
No matter what you have, be it little or a lot, you will always come to the end of your life and at that very instant, you will lose everything. You may have a good, last will and testament. You may have planned out your estate with blind trusts and so forth, but no matter how well organized you have planned out things, when you die, your control ends and your wealth also ends. The movers don't transport your things to heaven for you.
Others may carry out your wishes to the letter, for a time. But sooner or later your estate will be squandered and you will never know of its demise.
Now, from the spiritual point of view, there is a better wealth. The wealth that comes from God is far superior to anything from this world. God provides all things to all people. So as you grow up spiritually you will realize that no matter what you do in life, it is God who brings things together for you during your life. Without Gods provision you would have nothing. Regardless of your abilities or ancestry, if God does not bless your life, then you will have virtually no life.
True wealth comes to you when you grow up spiritually and remain in that high spiritual state during whatever remains of your life. Wealth comes to you through the doctrine resident in your soul, through your application of doctrine to your daily life, and through your obedient responsibility to all that God expects of you.
God does all of the work. You can earn nothing. You can deserve nothing. In spiritual maturity, you are given the privilege of receiving blessing that you did not sow or work for. God plants, cultivates, grows, and harvests, and you receive the harvest.
Wealth in the spiritual realm can be of this world (if God so chooses to give it to you), but more importantly, your real wealth will come in eternity where you will live out the vast majority of your life - forever. Spiritual wealth runs the gamut from peace of mind, to owning vast estates, to receipt of eternal blessings and privilege at the Judgment Seat of Christ. The last one is the big one.
Unlike the world, spiritual wealth is available to everyone. It does not depend on your ability, your status of birth, or your luck. Spiritual wealth is available to everyone who simply studies their Bible daily and grows up to spiritual maturity. Even your spiritual growth is not of your doing. God causes that to happen as well. Just as your physical body's cells divide and multiply without your input, so too God causes your spiritual growth when you faithfully study His word?
Now think about this a bit. When you study the Bible you read of Adam and Eve. You read of Moses, of David, of Joseph and Mary. You read of the Apostles and the life of Jesus. You gain principles of life with regard to good moral character and so forth. But, the Bible does not teach you the secrets of making rocket fuel, or how to make a better mouse trap. You simply read the Bible day after day, month after month. You read the same things over and over, again and again, and you have read it all. You know it all. Yet by simply complying with Gods mandate to study daily, your eyes are opened wider and wider to reality by means of His supernatural enhancement of your soul.
So, don't ever think that you have arrived and have no further need of Bible study. That would be your greatest mistake. You can lose it all by becoming bored.
And that is our last verse in this passage. Hope deferred is your indifference to Bible study and to your spiritual life. Ignore it, disregard it, think that you have no need of it, or that you have a better approach to your spiritual side, and your life will lose out on the greatest wealth even beyond your imagination. Remember spiritual wealth goes beyond this life. It goes into eternity.
He who pursues Gods Word, also pursues his own desires (desires which are reinvented by God through doctrine). These dreams and desires are far better than anything which you can come up with from your own sin nature. The sin nature cannot bring your soul to contentment and happiness, but God can.
Honest work is that which is performed in fellowship and in the sphere of ones spiritual growth. Dishonest work is anything and everything which is gotten outside of fellowship.
Ignoring your spiritual life will bring you to great disappointment and embarrassment. Pursuing your spiritual life will bring you to the tree of eternal provision.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
