Lesson # Prov. 7:10-18
Study Material - Prov. 7:10-18
You must be in fellowship prior to your Bible study, so that the spiritual information you receive can become a source, of blessing to your soul and produce spiritual growth.
Prov. 7:10-18
10 And behold, a woman comes to meet him, Dressed as a harlot and cunning of heart. 11 She is boisterous and rebellious; Her feet do not remain at home; 12 She is now in the streets, now in the squares, And lurks by every corner. 13 So she seizes him and kisses him, And with a brazen face she says to him: 14 'I was due to offer peace offerings; Today I have paid my vows. 15 'Therefore I have come out to meet you, To seek your presence earnestly, and I have found you. 16 'I have spread my couch with coverings, With colored linens of Egypt. 17 'I have sprinkled my bed With myrrh, aloes and cinnamon. 18 'Come, let us drink our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with caresses.
Solomon has started to describe a parable using a young man who is ignorant of Bible doctrine, who goes out in the world and sees the enticements it has to offer. The young man strolls closer and closer toward those enticements until he finally is caught up in their activity.
The enticements of the world is the harlot. The one who lures the young man with her wiles and seductivity. Sex is the obvious activity for this parable because it is appealing to most people, is understood by most. People generally understand what goes on in the seductive world of sex
But actually the harlot represents more than just the sexual enticements of the world, it represents anything, any activity that steals a person away from a program of Bible study, therefore preventing one from learning of the traps that the world has waiting for him or her.
The harlot is dressed appropriately with her low neck line, high hem line, trinkets of jewelry, and fine perfumes to tease and lure her prey. At first she cannot be seen then she is everywhere. At first you do not see her, then once trapped by her suggestiveness, you begin to see her everywhere - in your thoughts, in your actions to seek her out and pursue her.
Her peace offering contradicts the peace offering of the Levitical offerings we recently studied. She seeks a reconciliation between you, the victim, and her suggestive offerings. She is always on the move, no stability, never at home. She does not have a home life. The sin nature has no home, but is always restless and on the go. It is never satisfied, never comfortable. It has no purpose, no objective, lots of empty plans, but no future to look to.
She seizes the person and covers them with kisses, the enticements of pleasure in order to keep them in the trap. The harlot has an insatiable appetite and will stop at nothing to satisfy it, thinking nothing about the victim it holds in the trap.
Her ornaments of love come with perfumes that fill the senses, with drinks that allow one to escape reality just a little more. Self gratification is the order, and pleasure the perceived reward. The person drives hard in pursuit to gratify the senses, but senses are tied to emotion not intellect.
Principle - emotion does not think, it either responds to something or it reacts to something. In its proper uses, emotion should be driven by the intellect, not the other way around. Yet a person who lacks Bible doctrine is susceptible to being guided by their emotion rather than the natural function of their intellect
And so it is with the sin nature. Whether you pursue human good activities, or sin (asceticism or lascivious) activities. These then are the two sides of the sin nature coin - human god on one side and sin on the other side. Sin is of course broken down into two further categories which includes the arrogant self righteous crusader type on the one extreme, and the fun loving, free spirit sex pot on the other extreme. Regardless of your weakness or tendency, if you reject Bible doctrine in your life and do not heed the advice of the first few verses of this proverb, then your destiny is going to be entrapment in the world of the sin nature. It is a powerful world too.
With no doctrine in your soul, then you have nothing with which to combat those temptations. Listen and learn from the story of the harlot and the young man. He has no foundation and has wandered away from his home, his place of security and common sense. The harlot entices him away, but that is just what people want when they have nothing with which to fill up their hopes of happiness and satisfaction in life.
And, as we will soon see, the end of that pleasure road is not the happiness that the young man expected. It will be misery, doom, and self destruction.
Now is the time to post a prayer.
End Of Lesson
Study to show thyself approved (mature) unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing (studying/discerning), the Word of truth.
